"I suspect that the sexual future of the forty-something woman involves having more than one partner at all times."

Just something I read in the paper.

IN THE COMMENTS:
[I]t seems like most men just can't keep up with our needs. I have no idea what men are doing with their supposedly outrageous sex drives because we are just not getting the satisfaction we deserve.

"Give"?

My wife was smart to reach down 7.5 years her junior. Now whether she was smart to pick me is a separate question. But thank goodness our appetites are approximately equal.

Put another way: when I'm her age, I will be glad she's not my age. :)

...bizarre and embarrassing trips to A&E...

Did anyone else wonder what A&E was? I figured it wasn't Arts and Entertainment so I Googled. Accidents and Emergencies. The equivalent of our "ER" in the UK I surmise.

Well, this is of no benefit to me at all.

Unless there are rich, attractive widows in their forties looking for young lawyers from Mississippi.

I could agree to being used.

I just earlier today had a conversation with Nina about this very topic - the sex lives of women over 40 and why it is that men seem not able to keep up with us. Maybe I'll blog about it too.

I hate to be a booty pooper but the reason "most men can't keep up with [the needs of women in their 40s]" is because those men are spent from satisfying the needs of women in their 20s...

I don't know where I read this, but it was that men hit their sexual peak somewhere around 18, whereas women do somewhere around 40. The solution, obviously, is for those 40 year old women to be dating the college kids (not - we have had a couple of recent convictions in Colo. recently when the women went below that).

Sorry, in my last post, I wanted to point out the dangers of dropping below college aged guys in age - statutory rape laws apply to women too in many states.

Single guy here looking for a single woman! I've been single for a while, so I have a lot of stored up sexual energy for someone in their "sexual prime." If I can't completely sate the need, she can at least be certain that I will have given it my ALL! I'd be happy to field applications! :) (Or send mine)

Can that many women really get more than one guy in bed at once? I would think that most of our latent homophobia would make this somewhat problematic.

I wonder what the evolutionary purpose of this cruel joke is? Unless the 40 year old woman looks like she's 25, her needs are not going to be satisfied by those "18" year olds.

"homophobia"? Forget that. How about just "nakedguyphobia."

Allicent --

Great to see an article about female sexuality beyond the stereotypes!

Where?

The sexually insatiable older woman (who has a husband who either isn't "man enough" for her or is obsessed with younger women) is an old stereotype, and this article doesn't put much work into even trying a novel variation on it.

Update: Ann, the unsatisfied women over 40 are not reading your blog. Or maybe I'm just being rejected. Sheesh... No applications or requests in sight. Rather than feeling rejected, I will posit that readers of Althouse are sexually satisifed. Congratulations.

"A question related to Adriana's is 'What are the evolutionary consequences?' I suspect they're negligible under present conditions. They could be transformational if technology makes it possible for women to remain reproductive as late into their lives as men do."

Easier said than done. First, you need to be talking of, say, 100 generations. Secondly, increased fertility at the end of reproductive life is much less valuable evolutionarily than it is earlier.

I don't think that this will ever rise to an evolutionary level because most women just don't want to have kids in their 40s. My girlfriend is spending a lot of time taking care of her young grandsons. And she is amazed at how much harder it is physically as she nears 50, as when she did it before at half her current age.

For these reasons, I doubt that 40 something childbearing will ever have that much evolutionary impact.

Tania Glyde (tee hee), I can only speak for one ordinary average older man but, luv, that ain't sexy.

One wonders if the author would have enjoyed her 20s more if she'd spent less of them in drunken debauchery?

jeff..drunken debauchery is so much fun, don't knock it! I reached my peak in my mid thirties and it keeps getting better.
