"I think that Rudy, as far as terrorism goes, is just entering his peak killing years. And that's why I'm for him."

In case you missed Dennis Miller on O'Reilly last night, here's the transcript.

hmmmm O'Really and Miller ... I guess that's how Faux Noise got its reputation for fair and balanced.

And those cheap shots about Edwards..why I bet O'really? spends more on that on phonesex and lupha gourds.

"O'really? spends more on that on phonesex"

Still less than what John Edwards spends on hair maintenance.

actually i think Oreally?'s out of court settlement for his phone sex caper is in the neighborhood of 500 years of Edward's hair maintenance.....probably up there with the cost of the 30,000 foot house.

But the real subject here is the Miller quote....it is flippant and also sounds about right but like much of what Miller says, it is cute and short and wryly funny but not sure it adds to anything that needs substance.

I'm sure many people don't care for it but I enjoyed the segment.

Far more entertaining than David Shuster lapping up KOs BS or Larry Kings softballs.

Lighten up Francis. Its comedy.

I’m betting dollars to donuts the ‘peak killing years’ comment has many on the left close to delirium.

I love Dennis Miller even during his liberal days mainly because I thought he was one of the funniest people on SNL. I was pretty surprised how much he turned to the right but I guess for some people, 9/11 was their Come to Jesusland Moment.

Lighten up Francis. Its comedy.

Sorry Sgt. Hulka, but its been my experience that liberals lost any semblance of a sense of humor.

Giuliani...carry the South? Don't think so. He's from New York City, too many marriages (don't know why and don't care), seems to have trouble with some hotbutton social issues, seems oddly frail, too.

He did hold it together on and after 9/11...better than Bush did.

I saw Miller and thought he was great. His rationale for supporting Rudy is basically the same as mine, so I loved it.

The first thing I ever heard George Carlin say was the following: "Have you ever noticed that the women who are against abortion are the ones you wouldn't want to f@#^ in the first place?"

B-b-b-b-b-but abortion is such a serious issue! How dare he make light of it! Then again, it's the right-wing wackos he's making fun of, so I guess that's OK.

Lighten up Francis indeed!

Don't leave out Miller's "Tom Joad" reference re John Edward's neighbors' abodes.

Like him or hate him, Miller can sure turn a phrase. I even enjoyed his MNF stint.

Joan said...

Thanks, Ann -- I appreciate Miller even more in print than on screen because sometimes he talks so fast I miss things. He cracks me up.

Pat you fell for Ann's pop quiz - she was trying to determine how many of her readers actually watch The O'Reilly Factor.

I don't. He's a blowhard. And I hate the way he interrupts his guests [even the liberals] just as they are making an interesting point.

FOX has gone downhill too, so I rarely watch anymore. They were a great information broker back during the Florida recount, providing news that the liberal MSM was supressing. But now its all about Greta and her Chandra/Lacy/Natalie underwear sniffing rubberneck.

The only FOX News segment I tune into is Brit Hume's analysis with Freda and Mara.

Yup...me too.

As fo Miller, I have always found him to be a very funny guy....and the only reason to even occasionally check out "The Factor". His simplistic bottom line remarks on most issues usually strike me as fundamentally accurate. Yes, we DO need a good terrorist killing president in 08!. Who could possibly argue with that? :-).

I think it's wrong that millions of Americans are forced to watch Fox News, given its political bias. I believe that all Americans should be able to watch CNN or MSNBC or even use the Internet for news and opinion if they so choose.

It's so easy, between the 'net the and remote, to watch news/commentary shows by individual segment, and thus to get a sense of what's happening on all of 'em during a given hour.

As far as any quiz goes, here's what my question would be:

Does anybody watch any entire news/commentary programs from start to finish anymore? (I'm talking regularly scheduled ones, especially nightly ones, and excluding documentaries or special reports, or shows like the Colbert Report or the Daily Show, which I suspect people tend to view episodically, or not.)

I so totally treat the whole TV news/commentary arena as a salad bar, or buffet. No prix fixe for me! (No waiters either: I'll help myself, thank you.)

Surely I'm not alone in this, especially among 'net users.

My favorite Miller MNF moments:

Referring to the '50's photo of Jane Mansfield and Sophia Loren, with Sophia giving Jane's cleavage the eye. You could just see the Question Mark thought balloon appear over the head of MNF nation...

Back when he was in his prime, and he just completed a great run, Miller commented on Marshall Faulk: "All you can say about that is -- Faulk!" (but pronounced much closer to f*ck!)

Hell, let's let Bill Buckley and Brian Lamb from C-SPAN cover a MNF game...can't you just see Buckley singin' "turn out the lights the party's over," like Dandy Don?

Just keep in mind that the same New York firefighters who endorsed Giuliani when he ran for mayor, a few months ago issued a blistering press release castigating him for the aftermath of the WTC attack.

The press release focused on the fact that the careful operation looking for remains went through about 1% of the wreckage, until the gold and silver boullion deposits from the Bank of Nova Scotia had been recovered (curiously the operation was specifically focused in that area of the wreckage), after which (using their terminology) it became a 'scoop and dump' operation. Many human remains have not ever been recovered, and many of those which were recovered, were recovered incidentally during the cleanup if they were visible when a scoopful of debris was dumped, indicating that if the wreckage was more thoroughly searched most or all of the remains might have been recovered.

Keep in mind that the firefighters endorsed Giuliani twice, so the argument that they are reflexively against him because they are unionized doesn't hold up under closer scrutiny.

So the charge that he was more worried about getting the gold out than the bodies of those who died will be brought up sooner or later in this campaign and he will have to answer it.

Further, the NYT recently published details of a 2000 briefing that Giuliani received about Bernard Kerik's ties to organized crime, and answer why he chose to name Kerik police commissioner anyway (and push him as Director of Homeland Security.) His ties to Kerik directly undercut what is perceived as his biggest strength.

And like it or not, if Giuliani is the GOP nominee, you can expect that by the election, he will be (courtesy of tens of millions in negative ads) practically married to Bernard Kerik, frankly an individual he showed more loyalty to and stuck with longer than any of his ex-wives.

Time to start doing oppo research on Thompson.

I would add that I love programable remotes - CNN and MSNBC are auto-deleted from my scans.

Does anybody watch any entire news/commentary programs from start to finish anymore?

Brit Hume's "Special Report". Good analysis, good panel, tough questions [although I think Juan is not as an effective liberal advocate as Mara Liasson and should be replaced]. I'm not surprised the Democrat candidates are afraid of being subjected to his scrutiny.

Also Chris Mathews, before he became a raging spitting lunatic. His coverage of the Clinton sexual abuse was fair & balanced.

Brian Doyle said...

MSNBC has Olbermann (who is a blowhard, no doubt), so I can see why a hardcore wingnut might boycott, but CNN?

Accusations that CNN is liberally biased mean that the accuser will only accept the alternate reality that is Fox News, the only place where Bill Clinton committed "sexual abuse."

"Pat you fell for Ann's pop quiz - she was trying to determine how many of her readers actually watch The O'Reilly Factor."

That's not Ann's style. Unlike you lefties, she respects her readers, so if she were interested in that data, she would probably just ask.

Fen said...

Doyle: Accusations that CNN is liberally biased

Even I admit FOX leans right. But you're so far to the Left that you can't see CNN is biased Left. Think about it - CNN was forced to admit they deliberately withheld information re Saddam's torture chambers and rape rooms. Why do you still trust them as a broker of information?

Imagine if the BBC admitted they knew about Auschwitz but refused to report it b/c they thought it would shape support for military intervention. Would you still trust them?

Do you still trust CBS? Do you understand they've been cheating you for decades, and they just got caught?

Do you even read opposition position on the issues?

I just love how the lefties like to jump on Fox and O'Rielly but ignore 'Leprosy Lou' Dobbs on CNN who, scarily, actually seems to *believe* his ravings.

Brian Doyle said...

The lefties haven't been ignoring Dobbs at all. Check ThinkProgress, Atrios, Orcinus, among other blogs, not to mention the NYT.

If he'd been ignored, he wouldn't still be trying to weasel his way out of lying.

F--- Glenn Beck too, while we're at it.

Revenant said...

Nobody enjoyed his MNF stint.

I did, the two times I saw it -- but that might be because I don't actually like football and found Miller's weird commentary amusing.

Brian Doyle said...

Why do you still trust them as a broker of information?

I don't really, but it's not that I don't trust them to provide more or less accurate facts, it's the editorial slant of the coverage, the people they have on as "analysts", and their tendency to fill their news day with stories ripped from Drudge that bother me.

You'll excuse me if I don't get too wound up about that Saddam story, or even look into it. The biggest problem with the MSM coverage of him was that it failed to debunk the Bush/Cheney Lie (really Bush/Cheney Lie Numero Uno) that he was involved in 9/11.

If CNN were, to use the doughy pantload's notorious phrase, "objectively pro-Saddam," they would at a minimum have done that. The notion that CNN would withold information that's damaging to Saddam Hussein because it's damaging to Saddam Hussein is absurd on its face.

I have not been called a lefty in 20 years at least and I was poking some fun at you and Ann - she uses sneakily smart posts to get her readers going once in a while.

Dolye: You'll excuse me if I don't get too wound up about that Saddam story,

You don't get to wound up about torture chambers, rape rooms, or concentration camps. Check.

The biggest problem with the MSM coverage of him was that it failed to debunk the Bush/Cheney Lie (really Bush/Cheney Lie Numero Uno) that he was involved in 9/11

Huh? Bush/Cheney never claimed Saddam was involved in 9-11. Where on earth did you get that info?

Torture is a strong word, Fen. I prefer enhanced interrogation chambers, where they intentionally misspell the subject's name until they finally crack.

Unknown said...

Oh, thanks for clearing that up, AJ. It did not seem like you. :)

Fen said...

Doyle: Torture is a strong word, Fen

Sure. Maybe its because your "trusted" information brokers are still keeping things from you:

"IF you know about the torture manual used by al-Qaida, then you did not learn about it by reading the Washington Post, the New York Times or sadly, this newspaper. Neither the Associated Press nor Reuters picked up on the story. Fox News was the only major outlet with the story.

...But while they ignored the handbook story, the New York Times and Washington Post did not hesitate to publish a press handout from the United Nations condemning Guantanamo Bay.

...Gitmo has been demonized in part by the false and preposterous allegation that a guard flushed an inmate's Koran down the toilet. The New York Times published no less than 29 stories about this lie."

I think my favorite Guiliani terrorist killing moment has to be the footage of him constantly walking around Manhattan with a mask on because he didn't have an office. Because he put it in the same place that was bombed the last time. Okay, so that isn't really a terrorist killing moment. And I'm sure he has killed terrorists. Because he gets it, and he's tough on terrorists.

Fen said...

As opposed to say, Obama, who's policy will consist of returning from Tehran waving a piece of paper and declaring peace in our time.

Yeah, his debate response to the terrorist-attack question was priceless -- babbling about Katrina and disaster response. It took him a couple of minutes to remember that Americans expect the President to do more than sift through the rubble and pay off the survivors. Pretty telling.

I have to say, one of the most refreshing things about Miller is that he still talks about *killing* terrorists, instead of using passive terminology and euphemisms like "hunt down", "oppose", or "fight".

The seminal Rudy moment for me was when he threw the anti-Jew Saudi Prince's money back in his face. Candidates like Romney or HRC (or that other dynasty politician, W) can babble platitudes all they want and plot the electoral mechanics to a nanovote, but I have never seen a moment of equal passionate conviction from either of them and probably never will.

Yes, Rudy is prepared for war, even if there's killing involved. If the bad guys think so too we might have a chance.

hdhouse said...

PatCa...my seminal Rudy moment was when his wife went to court and got an order to keep him from bringing his mistress home to sleep with him when his son was in the house.

i will pay for 1000000 of those to be printed and distributed. the DNC has my offer but they tell me I'm like the 20th person who will pay for that printing.

So I thought of his loyalty (to a point) to his business partner Bernard Kerik....I contacted Hasbro to print up about a million "get out of jail free" cards with his picture on it...they didn't want to relase such a valuable property just for political reasons...

guess i'm just down to going door to door..i figure 50 a day for a month if he is the nominee...hey 1500 votes maybe i can get against him.

if you are from ny and nyc..you will know soon enough that he is "that awful".

How judgmental! I thought we were supposed to forgive politicians their sexual entanglements (see Clinton, Bill).

"So I thought of his loyalty (to a point) to his business partner Bernard Kerik."
No! A politician with a less than honest associate?

But I'm sure the Dems will come up with a pure, honest, tough-on-terror candidate (see Clinton, Hillary) I can vote for instead.

hdhouse said...

oh PatCa grow up. No one gives a rats ass if you vote for Hillary or not. The subject is Rudy.

You've just been through 7 years of twinkie the clown as president and making one excuse for him after another. are you going to start again with Rudy?

Revenant said...

PatCa...my seminal Rudy moment was when his wife went to court and got an order to keep him from bringing his mistress home to sleep with him when his son was in the house.

You have an unhealthy interest in Rudy's sex life if that's your idea of the key moment in his career.

So he had his mistress over while his son was in the house. So what? He could have a ten-hooker orgy with his son in the house for all I care. We're not voting for Father of the Year here. :)
