About that handbag strap murder...

Gatti hanged himself. It "would have been impossible for her to suspend and hang a man of that size."

Is there any difference between the police and the criminals in Brazil?

Those who fail to click the link might believe that the quote came from the authorities, but it's only her lawyer saying it's "impossible" she killed him. Me, I'm not just taking his word.

Given the way this case has played out, I am only willing to say that we don't know what happened. And that this conclusion does not strike me as conclusive, any more than the previous conclusions did.

If there were racial overtones to this case, most people would already have come to a conclusion.

"You'll take my handbag straps when you pry them from my cold assorted colors of velvet handbags!"

Brazilian Police: 'Hey, Mrs. Gatti, sorry about that whole 'throw you in jail and make a big international story' thing there' (*blush*).

Oh, the ESPN story notes that "some of Gatti's friends said they still suspect her."

It also notes that they want to have an autopsy conducted in Canada. They quite obviously don't trust the Brazilian authorities. I don't know what an autopsy is supposed to show that they don't already know, but this desire shows that they really, really don't trust what they've been told.

Such a sordid story, this.

The suspicions from the deceased person's family are always a problem. That is why a death with no witnesses requires an autopsy. The autopsy is to get the family members to go on with their lives and not start idiotic revenge talk against the suspects or the Police for being "in on it".

I had no idea that a handbag strap was sturdy enough to support the weight of an adult male.

This is a teachable moment for me.

An autopsy might show if his neck sustained injuries beyond the power of his wife's strength to inflict. What would be of more use would be to see if there is anything in the rooms where he was found that can support his weight. Like for instance; is there a ceiling fixture that is half-way pulled out?

But he was a super-featherweight.
