"A true superbug that initiates a future era of untreatable gonorrhea."

Look out.

OT: That reminds me - Half Happy Birthday to Rush Limbaugh on his half-birthday! 61 and a half years-old today.

Wait...you need to have a complementary conspiracy theory as well. You know....CIA, George Bush, the Jooos!!

And you need a victim. We used the gay population for the AIDS conspiracy theory. I'm not sure we can use that again.

Otherwise, the story just ain't got legs!!

The evil drug companies should be taxed accordingly in order to fund the more efficient public-funded research efforts at our nation's campuses to find new antibiotics.

When I was a teenager, they taught us to fear HIV and other viral infections. Gonorrhea, Syphilis and Chlamydia were considered easy to cure and not too harmful as long as you caught them early.

Non-sexual bacterial diseases are scary, too. My brother-in-law has a huge MRSA sore on his leg. Caught it years ago in the Marines and can't seem to eliminate the infection permanently.

Rush and I are not 61 and a half today. We're 60 and a half!

To be fair, I can never remember how old Meade is either. 57, I think, but I keep saying 58.

I was born in 1951, so I'm always one year behind the final digit in the year.

My maternal grandmother was born in 1900. It was so delightfully easy to remember her age.

Our new world order of IMF and UN rulers could be wiped out along with the female sex slaves in the sex industry that they promote everywhere they go.

That alone should make research into STDs eligible for TARP funds.

Here we are in 2011 and my father was born in 1898 and my mother 1901 and I was born in 1936. This spread in years always amazes me.

Well, it looks like Ronald Colman's old dictum about fishing in forbidden waters still holds true.

The Blonde has a wealth of horror stories on the subject, having worked 5 years in Communicable Disease and doesn't believe in casual anything. Winning her was a little like the Siege of Troy.

No, the only safe sex is sex with your sweetie (is he gonna hear about this!).

Especially if she's armed.

traditionalguy said...

Rube...On my maternal grandfather was born in 1869. That is a 142 year spread.

Too bad that Obama and Pelosi have decided to destroy health care delivery system in the USA by making it into another government job.

When I split up with my first husband in 1987, a colleague of mine, referencing AIDS, needled me about picking a terrible time to become single again. I've remembered that assholean remark for a quarter century.

I've argued this for years about NHC - they never talk about how much STDs cost this country. This type of discussion covers sooo much ground....

No smoking, no tanning, no food, but sex?

Can't touch that.

Abstinence is cheap.

Just say "no."

Monogamous nuclear families matter.

MALES MATTER.

It's the way out of poverty, it makes a strong, productive society.

It's interesting that this thread is adjacent to the one about the gonorrhea superbug.

Take a permissive culture that has lost its way morally, add broad-spectrum antibiotics and boil for thirty years: the result is a real mess.

Oh well.

I thank heaven I was a hostage during the sexual revolution.

Yes and guess who will spread this like wildfire:

a) Gay males

b) Anyone else

c) We can't contemplate since being gay is sacrosanct.

Given that you're not apparently gay or an intravenous drug user, you really had nothing to worry about.

But of course you good liberals have to pretend "everyone" is at risk for HIV...

There's so many different causes in Hollywood that I'm surprised no one has picked up on this one. I can see Meryl Streep would want to keep her distance, but for other stars it could only enhance their image. On Sunday join Charley Sheen and Lady Gaga as they march for the cure.

Anybody else think it's interesting that this little revelation and the polygamy thing break on the same day?

Could it be somebody is trying to tell us something?

I know, just my imagination...

I have a feeling plenty of heterosexual, non-intravenous drug abusers get AIDS. You just don't hear about them. All you had to do was have sex with someone who had sex with someone who was bisexual, or homosexual, or used intravenous drugs.

Of course, that couldn't happen in Gotham.

Could it?

How early?

Sixteen? Fifteen?

Inquiring minds want to know. ;)

I remember hearing of this in the late 1970s.

Bacteria mutate, better drugs are invented to kill them. Rinse, repeat.

Um, not really.

Jay is what this super-gonorrhea will be like when it gains semi-sentience.

grackle said...

Sigh. Another thing to worry about. I’m in a monogamous heterosexual FWB relationship of several years but you never know when you might have to go hunting for sex again. The last one I had went back to her ex-husband. And, predictably, regretted it soon after. If you leave, never go back. If they leave, never take them back. Abstinence is not an option I would seriously contemplate. I would take my chances.

The link Jay posted wasn’t reassuring. Heterosexual contact accounted for 44% of the diagnoses. Or is my reading of the chart, “Transmission Category,” wrong? Seems a bit high. Wouldn’t be the first time …

I'm posting facts.

You are calling names.

Want to take a guess as to why that is?

ndspinelli said...

I'll assume a fact not in evidence and that is Meade is speaking theoretically about "no sex."

erictrimmer said...

Funny, mariner.

I should have chosen better words. The good news is, if I ever have to make a speech on this topic, I won't make the same mistake and end up being mocked on The Daily Show.

Palladian said...

"I'm posting facts.

Because you're an asshole?

You posted two links to the CDC website. What "facts" were you posting, again? And what is your reason for posting these "facts", anyway? Are you making some sort of point? Tell us, what is it?

Palladian said...

"Bacteria mutate, better drugs are invented to kill them. Rinse, repeat."

The problem is, we're running out of better drugs to kill these sorts of pathogens, because our drugs have helped evolve organisms that are stronger and better at surviving our attacks. Sometimes we get lucky, and going back to an old drug does the trick, like when I was infected with MRSA 5 years ago and it took a sulfa drug to subdue it.

But the pace of drug development can't keep up, and eventually the old drugs won't work anymore either.

By that time, Obamacare will have really had time to kick in. Guess how fast drug development will happen then?

MadAsHell said: "And you need a victim. We used the gay population for the AIDS conspiracy theory. I'm not sure we can use that again." Ah, but we can. The suffers of the new disease are predominately men involved in anal intercourse. The gay connection is back in play and as fresh as springtime! Huzzah!

Paco Wové said...

"Or is my reading of the chart, “Transmission Category,” wrong?"

I think so. I get

12860 / (23846 + 3932 + 1131 + 12860 + 76) = 30.7% of diagnosed HIV cases caused by heterosexual transmission.

What's really shocking (to me, anyway) is the hugely disproportionate impact on blacks.

Scott M said...

More validity to the phrase, "when the country gets a cough, blacks get the flu". I'm not sure all the dynamics at play behind that, but I doubt decades of leaders panhandling race hustles and promoting victimhood helps.

Looks like the 70-year free-love party that got started in 1945 is winding down. The FWB and hookup culture is the last of it. When the party's over, boomers, will you turn off the lights?

Soon we'll be returning to the good(?)/bad(?) old days of nice girls don't, young men and women getting married at 21 till death do us part, and infidelity is a tort on your spouse.

If it feels good, do it. What can go wrong?

grackle said...

Paco, you are right. Thanks. I see my mistake now. About one in three. Still kind of risky, though.

Easy enough to avoid through the use of carefully applied monogamy or, if that is not available, a rubber. (Go on, spring for the whole $1 that will set you back.) Reminds me of a cartoon I saw in Playboy back in the 70's: Doctor looking slyly at attractive blond in his office - "Yes, you can get VD in bathrooms, so I'd suggest you stop screwing in them."
