"High school students who don't feel like walking to school in the cold are causing a spike in car thefts on the north side of Milwaukee..."

... say police.
"What we see probably more than anything, generally around this time of year, is around high schools... Kids that have to walk to school, they'll walk through the alleys. They'll find somebody that's got their car running left unattended. It's just a quick, easy way to get to school. They'll leave the car within a block or two of school."

It used to be that parents told their kids, "When I was young I had to walk five miles to school in the freezing snow--and it was uphill both ways".

These litle car thiefs will tell their kids, "When I was young, I had to break into and hot wire a car to drive to school in the morning, then I had to break into another car to get home".

Times change.

cliff claven said...

In a drunken stupor myself and a couple buddies did that after closing a bar and not wanting to walk 10 blocks home. The running unnattended vehicle was a squad car.

And, because they talked it over with their parents, it'll be considered a good thing,...when they influence their peers.

North side of Milwaukee? Is that code for the poor side of town? Apparently these career criminals in training are unsupervised by their parents who condone stealing from anybody with little or no respect for their neighbors or strangers.

The good news is that CCW permits are allowed in Wisconsin thanks to Governor Walker. Wisconsin now honors permits from other states including mine. Once again the old saying "Those who give up their liberty for security are entitled to neither."

Is Wisconsin as lawless as it is made out to be or is that state a victim of biased reporting? The last time we drove through Wisconsin we didn't stop border to border.

I'd agree- there's stupidity on both sides here. Even aside from the risk of theft, it's not unheard of for an automatic transmission to slip out of "park," thus causing the vehicle to start moving with no driver on board.

Of course, you could eliminate that risk by setting the parking brake- but, I'd guess that no one does that.

That's not it....they can easily ticket an owner of a car because they can identify the owner...you have to catch the thief to charge him...harder.

That said, they do not investigate car thefts in Milwaukee. My son lives on the north side and he had a beat up old Civic (a good runner)that he bought for his wife to commute stolen from in front of his house (it wasn't running. Police came and took a report. He finally recovered it when he got notices of unpaid parking tickets. He went to location on the tickets and there it was. He called the police and told them "You can stop looking for it now". The cops admitted they don't cross reference tickets to stolen vehicles.

Or....perhaps a pressure switch activated bomb under the driver's seat so when the car thief shifts his/her ass they get blown to smithereeens.

Let's see what happened with the charges that had Garage so excited.

First, the investigation was initiated when the now-governor's chief of staff asked the police, when Walker was county executive, to investigate this Mr. Russell. The cops seized Russell's work computer months before the election, and Russell quit campaigning for Walker and was NOT offered a job in his gubernatorial administration.

So the initial investigation had NOTHING TO DO with the Milwaukee DA's John Doe investigation, which has gone on for over 18 months now and produced nothing of significance.

Second, neither of the other two men who were arrested had any direct connection with either Walker administration, and the one who was charged with child enticement for making a child show him the child's genitals, works for the state department of public instruction.

In other words, he's DIRECTLY AFFILIATED WITH THE AGENCY THAT REGULATES AND ADVOCATES FOR...GULP!...PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS!!!!!

Not that this will stop the deranged lefties from attempting to make this about how eeeeeeevil Walker is...it will just be another addition to their orchestrated litany of lies. To borrow a phrase.

At least, I don't believe that they believe that.

On the south side of Milwaukee, late-model Toyota Camrys and Honda Civics are the most popular to steal. But on the north side, the thieves usually prefer late-model minivans because they're easy to steal and because several friends can fit into the car and drive around until the car runs out of gasoline or hits something, Lubus said.

Oh look, now we know they don't believe it.

I think the police are making the point that the reason thefts are up is that more fools are leaving their cars running unattended. Has nothing to do with whether it's cold or hot or the kids have to go to school or the beach. Car is running. No one is around. Time to go for a drive. Question for WI locals: what is the actual risk of a juvie joy ride? What penalties - assuming the car is just left abandoned and "unharmed?"

I. too am enjoying my popcorn. Especially since this spectacle will make $20 for my favorite charity , the National Rifle Association.

Fuck that noise. If you live in Wisconsin you are CHOOSING segregation as a lifestyle. Try to be a corporation with such a "white's only" environment. The Badger State Company would be badgered out of existence by Jesse Inc.

In high school we used to pull all types of stunts and pranks. Stealing cars wasn't one of them, but moving them or rolling them over was.

There was also that party that some guys' snowblower ended up at the bottom of an inground pool. Or the party where a telephone was put into a microwave and nuked on high for minutes before someone smelled it.

Times change, but the stupidity doesn't.

Another one of garbage's hobby horses dies:

A report released Tuesday, Jan. 3, by the California High-Speed Rail Peer Review Group threatens to permanently derail plans for a network of 200 mph trains in the Golden State.

The group, which exists by state law and was directed by the California State Legislature to conduct the report, concluded that “moving ahead on the [High-Speed Rail] project without credible sources of adequate funding, without a definitive business model, without a strategy to maximize the independent utility and value to the state, and without appropriate management resources, represents an immense financial risk on the part of the state of California.”

Presently the California High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) intends to use $9 billion in voter-approved bonds — as well as $3.5 billion in promised federal funding — to construct an initial 130-mile segment of the railway between the cities of Chowchilla and Bakersfield in the state’s Central Valley. However, with that 2008 bond vote came the requirement for the California High-Speed Rail Peer Review Group to green-light the feasibility of CHSRA’s plan prior to the State Legislature issuing bonds. The group, headed by former CalTrans director and current Orange County Transportation Authority chief Will Kempton, advised via the report that the state Legislature shouldn’t fund the increasingly-criticized project.

That article is good news. I hope. Money needs to stop being poured into rat holes like 'high spped trains' dreamed up by the left.

Of course, for lefties like garage, facts are stubborn things.

Its gotta be exhausting being a lefty.

DT,

I'm actually shocked that CA has that sort of review on the project!

"I'm actually shocked that CA has that sort of review on the project!"

Me too...my brother works for CA DHS in Sacramento, he keeps me filled in on some of the insanity out there. As if I need to hear more, living in NY...what can I say, I guess misery loves company?!!

Jay, hasn't Jerry Brown already said he doesn't care what the report said?

Aren't Democrats the "Reality-based community" and the like?

I must have missed the part where Tony Rezko worked under Obama for 8 years.

My wife doesn't work for me. I guess I'm closer to the person behind me I never speak to than my wife.

Do you have ANY friends outside of your job? How is that even possible?

What does this have to do with Walker's long time aide's boyfriend, Brian Pierick?

Well, you're a Democrat and Democrats support pedophilia. That is how you roll, right?

Curious George 4:42 PM:

"That's the one...there were no riots, and it was one night. In one year."

It was only one night because after the first night there lots more police.

And there have been some incidents at the State Fair in prior years.

And there were other black-on-white racist mob attacks elsewhere that year, and in prior years. The downtown mall and Northridge shopping center have had serious problems, and in recent years Bayshore Mall has been having problems.

"My son lives on the North side in Riverwest...half the homes are owned by black, half whites."

There were racist attacks in Riverwest on July 4th.

"Milwaukee has a lot of nice areas, and I'll take it's lakefront over most."

Yes, it's great, but it has become another problem area. The "youth" problem has grown serious enough that for a number of years now the Milwaukee Police have had to seriously boost their presence, adopt a zero-tolerance policy toward minor traffic and conduct infractions in order to keep the punks in line, and keep a command center vehicle parked all day near one of the concession buildings.

It's silly to call Milwaukee "really ghetto" but it does have some serious problems of that sort.

Great point. I'm not sure, but I would be shocked if the Democrats didn't go full steam ahead and waste the $12 billion on the project.

there's two kinds of car theft: the professional who takes the vehicle to a chop shop and the local who just wants a free ride. the unbelievable part of this story is that the thieves are joy-riding their way to school.

I just discovered that I went to High School with Rick Santorum. Small town: pop.= 15K, big school: 1000 pupil per grade level. I never saw him steal a car, so he is qualified for the job.

Just reported:

For 2011 Los Angeles had the lowest crime rates since the 1950's. Ninth year in a row of reduced crime. The homicide rate is half what it was in the early 90's. Even the criminals are out of work.

There were reports related to the Iowa State Fair in 2010, as well.

You forgot Mayfair Mall...also problems. Of course Milwaukee has "problems of that sort". But it's not "really ghetto" despite that description by a moron that has never been here.

pst314 said...

Yes, I forgot all about those incidents at Mayfair Mall.

The "cruising" problems a few years ago were also pretty bad.

Well y'are a buncha fucking morons! Went to Beloit to see my friend in college - umm, 1992? - he came and picked me up off the bus from Chi and we walked through town to his dorms. On the way, sitting right in front of some theater was a nice fat Buick or Olds with doors unlocked, actually I think the diver's door was open. Nobody in it but the keys were in it and the motor running.

We looked at each other and shook our heads. We were nice boys of course, but we were New Yorkers not long graduated from Bronx Science and man, you don't do that in the city. We agreed that somebody should steal that ride just to teach the guy a lesson.

I mean SRSLY WTF? This is a lifestyle?
