"9-year-old slams Rahm over Chicago schools."

Drudge has been linking to this item at Salon:
"We are not toys, we are not going down without a fight ... This is racism," boy tells mayor over closures
We're expected to think wow, what a great kid.

I've watched the video, and my reaction is: Adults taught him a speech. He's being used as a political puppet. I've seen far too much of the use of children in politics — click my "using children in politics" tag — and I don't like it. I think it's especially bad to teach a child to yell angrily at another person and to exhibit hostility, and it's bad for us to express enthusiasm about a child who's good at giving the scripted performance. This is not how children should be taught. Ironically, the topic under discussion is education.

I've seen this before, in Wisconsin, with children taught to chant or sing the adults' hostility toward Gov. Scott Walker. I don't like when children are used to sing the praises of a politician either. We all know the absurd children's choirs singing about Barack Obama as if he's a divinity. But teaching children to perform hatred is another matter. Children need to learn about policy and politics over time, so that they understand the substance of the issues and can make their own choices.

It's really awful to see a 9-year-old used as a political mouthpiece and cheered as he yells rudely at an adult authority figure. He's also been taught to believe that he is hated because of his race — "this is racism" — and that the proper reaction is violence — "we are not going down without a fight." What a truly sad appropriation of youth!

It's about women, not children.

Guys think children ought be out and getting a job.

There's nothing wrong with that kid that can't be fixed by 12 hours in a textile factory walking a treadmill.

The only thing I didn't see in the post was your outrage at how the people that use kids in this manner are almost always liberal democrats.

Other than a couple of precocious teenagers (like that young lady a year or so ago)--Republicans and Conservatives and Tea Party types bring their kids, but they don't use them as swords and shields. Maybe you should have a "Democrat Child Abuse" tag.

By their own mismeasure (disparate outcomes), it is racism.

But then, everything white is racist, including the Western Civilization that built the schools he's bitching about. So why does he go? I'm flummoxed.

As for using children, well, it's fun to watch the lefties try to live up to their own rules. The beheading in Britain is more of the same multi-culti BS coming to roost. Theleft is Balkanizing Chicago and the rest of the US. Pitting us against each other.

In less than 10 years, this kid will be attacking shoppers on Michigan Ave, such is the future Chicago offers.

Yes, Pogo, the inevitable and logical result of an educational system that teaches that our entire Western Civilization is both deeply immoral and illegitimate..

"If you don't like where you're heading and don't change direction that's where you'll end up." We ain't changin' and the eventual, inevitable end result is before our very eyes..

As the obsequious Maitre D in Ferris Beuller said (in, appropriately enough, Chicago) : "I weep for the future!"

Matt Sablan said...

Adults probably did teach him that speech. So, I'm not impressed. If it weren't for the use of a kid, it might actually be fun to see the shoe on the other foot though.

Considering it's the Chicago public School system the kid is better off not going to school.
Better his mother should just drop him off at the library.
But that ain't gonna happen. Not in grievance town.

I disagree to an extent because black kids do talk like that. My daughters best friend since the fifth grade is a mixed race child. Her father is black, the mother is white.

Oddly I like the girl quite a lot even though she has called me a racist to my face for not voting for Barrack Obama. She had a picture of Obama hanging in her locker and nursed a major crush on him when he was running the first time. I use to try to explain to her that if Obama was conservative and espoused conservative idea's I would certainly have no problem voting for him. When that went over her head I finally told her I wasn't talking politics with a ten year old.

As the years went on she would still harass me, but I just ignored her. In the eighth grade she was over studying for a big test on the civil war with my daughter. I asked, "hey Leah, what party was formed to fight the spread of slavery?"...silence. I asked again. And again. Finally she mumbled, Republican.

It doesn't matter though. She informed my daughter recently that the school nurse must be a racist because she watches Foxnews.

I love this Jay Leno skit. The humor works precisely because adults are putting words in the mouths of children. You watch that and you immediately get that those aren't actual questions from children.

And it's funny because Obama can't hide anywhere. Not even in the fourth grade classroom! So that cracks me up.

No one is surprised, though, right?
This is what happens when you reject the melting pot (on the advice of Progressives), and keep a combination of the worst aspects of your ancestral culture, with idiot modifications of your own.

I was there in the late 60s when blacks reached the fork in the road. One way was the path of integration, the path preached by MLK. The other was the path recommended by the preachers of black power, the ones who made it clear that black society was perfectly fine as it was and did not need to adopt the mores and habits of the white. The first path required diligence and a hard slog to a goal that was near but out of sight. The latter required nothing but a certain attitude easily adopted. We will never know what lay down the road not taken.

Any group that uses kids as a major weapon in their arsenal has nothing really worth saying.

I don't like that my kids are being enslaved to the debt run up by morons. I'm not going to have the boys, though. preach about how unfair it is until they're old enough to actually know what they are talking about.

Indoctrinate them while they are young. Key concern about the radical left in our schools.

While the rhetoric is clearly second-hand, the closing of his own school is one of those rare political issues that a 9-year-old might have a genuine opinion about.

Illuninati said...

The red shirts on everyone visible tells the whole story. These are teachers' union representatives who have used their priviledged position to indoctrinate children to serve them. I noticed that the white people in the background were smiling when the black child yelled racism. He is their tool to serve their interests.

Although it sounds as if they are angry at Rham, this is all fake, since they are really on the same side. That young man will probably be a faithful Democrat for the rest of his life. Right now they are arguing about how to divide the spoils extracted from the taxpayers, but once that is all settled they will happily unite again to raise taxes and to increase the power of the union bosses.

Adults use second-hand rhetoric, too.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the boy shouts "We are black and we are proud. We are white and we are proud." I thought his speech was pretty inclusive in the multi-cultural way, even if he is completely unaware of the economics that may have driven Rahm's decision. Or am I stupid to think that Rahm would make a decision based on economics?

What church does this boy's family attend? I'm guessing his fire-and-brimstone style comes from church.

Wait, isn't the Chicago school system drowning in debt over pension payments to retired teachers who sucked by many objective measures of performance?

How much money should we use to prop up failing enterprises?

See, this is where we need sober leadership to put fiscal responsibility into a more positive light. Right now politicians think they need to promise unicorns for everyone. How come no one can put together a cogent story of the long-term corrosive effects that the Chicago school system has had on the community at large?

Riots rock Sweden's immigrant suburbs for fourth day

Government officials have called for calm while the rioters say they won't stop until there is a full investigation into the shooting death of a 69-year-old mentally ill Husby man last week who, police say, was swinging a machete as police attempted a house search.

What is it with the machetes?

Why don't Obama's sons open grocery stores like the sons of Kim or open restaurants like the sons of Duong or the sons of Bihari? Kim and Duong and Bihari were not only not white, they came to America from radically different cultures and spoke no english. Relative to Obama's sons their sons were TOTALLY DISADVANTAGED. And yet. So why don't Obama's sons get off the stick and do what their sons do?

They don't because they CAN'T.

Because if they coulda they woulda. Long ago.

The UGLY truth - the literally unthinkable truth in Althouseland - is they can't.

The Dems are especially guilty of exploiting children. I remember when the Dems had a twelve year old girl give the rebuttal speech to the President's speech (I think it was the president's speech) and when the Republicans criticize her rebuttal the Dems cried foul and accused the Republicans of picking on a twelve year old girl.

Richard Dolan said...

"What a truly sad appropriation of youth!"

Amen. You see the same effort in the "do it for the kids!" shtick used in many other contexts too. Whenever you hear that stuff, it's a fair bet that whatever you are being urged to "do for the kids" is something that doesn't make sense on its own. All an attempt at intimidation, trying to suggest that anyone who won't "do it for the kids" is a pariah to be ignored.

n.n said...

Bias is a product of nature. Prejudice is a product of nurture.

Think of the children or something.

This is the consequence of adults exploiting differentials and gradients to advance their political, economic, and social standing. They have denigrated individual dignity and devalued human life. Then they cover for the progressive corruption with taunts of racism, sexism, etc.

The sort of thing you referenced needs to be addressed and the president's remarks you recently also referenced were a subtle part of doing so. It will be interesting to see if TNC at the Atlantic gets around to it.

They don't because they have been taught they are entitled. They have been promised material, physical, and ego instant (or immediate) gratification. They are awaiting a return on their political investment.

If you look at black Africans, there are capitalists. They are underdeveloped, for various reasons, including stunted development caused by official corruption, disruption by cycles of retributive change, etc. But, they are there, and they struggle as independent individuals and families to improve their condition.

The nonsense we observe in America, is also obvious in Europe. In Europe, people who seek asylum regurgitate the nonsense they purportedly hoped to escape, including general violence. They have received the benefits of redistributive change, including the corruption caused by dissociation of risk.

The problem in all cases is sabotaged character development. Our emphasis on self-esteem (and privacy) has only served to exacerbate this failure.

Extra points for Rahm getting the racism smear that he advocated using against conservatives so many times over the years.

It's all tribal politics and short-term view and personal accountability (*gasp*). How appropriate to use a child because that 9-years-old worldview is precisely accurate for "progressives." Fascist, bullying, controlling, selfishness, violent when their demands aren't met by an unforgiving nature. Gimme, gimme, gimme.

The slide to the bottom has to hit bottom at some point. I don't think Chicago is there, yet, but there is no way in hell that I would ever consider moving back to an urban area. -CP

"The UGLY truth - the literally unthinkable truth in Althouseland - is they can't."

First comment: that's why Americans are fed up with them, and with everyone who cuts wholes into pieces, makes factions out of unity, busts up going concerns, or prevents formation of new, fresh ones.

Second comment: well, you thought of it. So did I.

Third comment: The Voting Rights and "Great Society" legislations were Democratic Party cunning to subjugate by dependence and buy the vote of a demographic formerly Republican or not reliably Democratic.

Fourth comment: On their own, most people want to be kind to others and will be, but, tell them they have to be and they will contract to surly self-protection. This is the irony of nanny-ism, aka communism. Who would command love (via legislation, direct order or judicial decision) generates hate.

Fifth comment: this is why Democrats are called "incompetent." They don't grasp the phenomenology of the life they want to rule, and, more to the point, they want to rule rather than govern, make reality rather than guide it. There was a time when Republicans carried the same disease. One such is called Reconstruction. Another is called Isolation.

This incident is just one example of our national situation, which could be described, in one run-on sentence/theorem:

The intelligence, discipline and willing sacrifice, at both an individual and collective level, that it is going to take to navigate through our current fiscal and cultural crisis, is greater than the mean intelligence,
discipline and willingness to sacrifice of the population itself.

So it's just the playing out of physics now. We have already crossed the event horizon. Just a matter of 'when'.

There ARE some things that might help, but how likely are these? For example:

1. Wide-spread acceptance and adoption (by consumers and producers) of low-carb. This will significantly reduce projected crushing medical expenses
2. Early (self) euthanasia of the terminally ill and aged.

3. The end of putting Progressives in power over us.

4. An un-fettered U.S. energy production industry

5. A serious de-emphasis of college, and a corresponding rise and embrace of the Trades and Guilds

6. A strong move from multi-culturalism , towards the Melting Pot.

7. A return of effective and pervasive shaming, along with public admiration for acts of charity and philanthropy.

8. An end to Class Warfare and the jealousy/envy that drives it

9. A national acceptance and implementation of this way to create generations of good citizens

a. Early personality and IQ test and feedback
b. Personalized life, school, and career-path guidance based on "a"

Those are a few off the top of my head. There are certainly more. I doubt ANY will occur.

In any event, I'll probably be dead before the worst of it, but it is inevitable. Those of my and later generations who didn't have kids, have accidentally made the right decision.

In the meantime, I'll strive to be happy in the days I have left, and impart what wisdom I have to my kids, so they are at least not taken by surprise.

Have a nice day!

If the parents set up the kid, that's fine. But here it seems to be the teacher's union, pushing ideas into the kids' minds. Same with the Obama song. Isn't it wrong for teachers to push their political agenda into kid's minds? That's the disgusting part.

I was a part of the busing in San Francisco in the early '70s. Most parents pulled their kids out of SF public schools, by either moving out of SF or sending them to private schools. I had the opportunity to go to a nearly all black inner city school in the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. It has changed my perspective for life.

Parents used their kids at the beginning, by boycotting the integration. I think that was quite appropriate. The kids were at stake.

Here, it seems to be adult salaries.
