Recycling. You've got to do it the right way. No animal parts in the table scraps to be thrown to the pigs. No hamburger, no bacon bits, no chicken bones, no Italian mobsters.

I read the story about the Italian mobster last night. I can think of few worse ways to be killed.

Does the law specifically exclude human tissues? Maybe there's an Italian mobster flesh loophole or perhaps there's a certain allowable amount, like with rodent feces?

I was going to write that its probably a good law applied for the wrong reasons, but then I thought: what's the point of the law? I couldn't figure it out until I found Homesteading Today!

Did you ever wonder who was going to eat those non-kosher pigs in 1st century Judea? Did the general Jewish populace just not follow the dietary laws? Were there such a number of Gentile foreigners (Roman functionaries, merchants, etc) that they had farms that catered to their tastes?

A pig isn't like a sheep or cow. There isn't much you can do with a pig but eat it.

Good reason for the law. Many years ago, we had 12 pigs on our hobby farm and we worked at a restaurant. It seemed to make sense to bring home the table scraps to feed the pigs, not realizing that pigs are omnivorous, so when they get a taste of meat, they become carnivorous and are out for blood. The one night I didn't bring home the scraps and tried to feed them pigfeed instead, they trampled down the fence and came after me! Took 2 hours and several neighbors to get them back in the pen and save my skin.

I now know more about pigs than I'd hoped. I like my food chains to be one way. Except for the bacteria and insects, but that can't be helped.

what's the point of the law?

The point of the law is to keep the food supply trichinosis, and other animal borne disease, free.

Some regulations actually do serve a public health service.

What possible reason is there for excluding animal tissue from certified meat? Old Wives Tales? Muslim theology? Medieval phobias?

When I was in school in the 70s, all our we scraped our cafeteria leftovers into a big slop can that was collected every day or two by a pig farmer. Food scraps were all recycled without a formal program. And we all somehow survived the horror. Though it was before mad cow disease, which is what I believe led the the meat ban.
