Ted Nugent apologizes "for using the streetfighter terminology of 'subhuman mongrel'..."

"... instead of just using more understandable language, such as 'violator of his own- the Constitution.'"

"Mongrel," like "bitch," refers to dog. It's totally inaccurate to call a human a mongrel, just like it's way off base to ever call a woman a bitch.

Nuge rocks! I really love how he turned the "apology" into another blast at Obama. He gets the attention, and then he gets the platform. People listen to him because he's a icon of popular culture, and he let's it loose. Notice he doesn't actually apologize to anyone, except perhaps the people being tarred by association, which is the new leftist blood sport. Can't defeat 'em on policy and argument, slander them by association!

Besides, this is Texas. They love this shit there.

Do you really think he gives a crap what the lefty press thinks of him? About as much as the Robertsons do, I'd imagine.

Fredor, you obviously don't get out much.

If Nuge isn't still relevant, why is Althouse posting about him, and why are you bothering to discuss the issue? The media is sure treating him like a popular culture icon!

He is, indeed, an icon of popular culture. Not yours, albeit, but that's a typical lefty conceit; that popular culture is for lefties to define. That's not true anymore.

Crack,

Your're assuming I'm a fan of the Nuge, musically. I'm not. Never have been. Could care less about his music and his influence is pretty minuscule. I wouldn't say he sucks, per se. He's just like a lot of guys coming out of Detroit back in the day with some songs and the balls to get on stage and perform them. Live their dream, y'know.

But that's not the point. Nuge has a relevancy now mostly to a huge fan base of 2nd Amendment and hunting advocates. This is on top of what is a rather large, and possibly misguided, musical fan base. Whether or not he's relevant as a musician has long ceased to be an issue. What he is now is a top class hunter with both bow and firearms who advocates putting what he would refer to as nature's bounty on the dinner table. He's remade himself as a rebellious outdoorsman, which is a quintessential American icon. He's living that life. People are drawn to that. They're also drawn to his no-bullshit presentation of his opinions. Some are even drawn to the music. He continues to tour live with regularity. People still come out to seen his shows, buy his music and have a good time. Not bad for a crappy Rock n Roller. Crack, you should be doing that well, eh?

This is where he stands a cultural icon now, and that's a real big thing in Texas, and throughout the West and Midwest, where that iconology is still valued and admired.

No, actually, that's one of the things I hate about the music world today - that's really the only option. No more Sid Barrett's, twiddling in their bedrooms, never to be seen. No more Steely Dan's, releasing albums without touring, allowing them to explore superior recording techniques and musical avenues. No more having to write good songs, even, when a novelty cut will go viral quicker.

People here have been teasing me about the state of my career, but I know they can't comprehend what's happened or where I fit in it. Or why I'm reluctant to re-enter it without financial backing that allows me control. I'm great onstage - can really hold a crowd - but I know what that's about, especially if you're good, and it's crushing WORK.

Not an endeavor to be rushed into or undertaken lightly - my talent ain't going away.

That's... it's just not rational, or logical. I don't care about "winning" a political argument. I'm trying to honestly understand the people putting *forward* the flawed arguments. What is the difference they see? Am I -missing- their logic? Have I overlooked something -- or is it really just a flaccid attempt at poisoning the well?

I want to understand; I'm not going to get that way by trying to pretend like a bad argument is a good one. The argument is flawed; it is not well founded. Until I can see WHY it is well founded, I see no reason to do anything else with the argument BUT question it.

Think of it like a game; if I can beat a game only using one move -- why learn the rest? The argument "All Republicans are secret racists," is just a chant, some sort of little meme or mnemonic device or social signalling -- it can't be what people REALLY believe.

Or, if it is, I want to know WHY.

Ted Nugent is a lose canon (this is hardly the first time he's said something similar), so I definately think any politician who would officially bring him into a campaign is not thinking straight.

As for the other, yes, republicans are not really going to win a competion based on celebrity supporters. However, they do need people to play at the RNC and some celebrities voluntarily campaign for the people they believe in, which is their right - just as much as it is yours or mine. So, I'm not sure what the best way to handle it is...

Well that's the only angle I'VE been looking at it from. I'm sure other people have different angles and different concerns. But personally, I'm not offended by Ted at all.

I think this is the angle you Republican strategic planners need to focus on right now. That's just my opinion of course.

See, this is a useful data point. It isn't a real belief [so, people parroting it aren't just illogical/angry people.]

Rather, it's a rational attempt to make people hate each other, angling for political gain from the fallout.

Depressing, but hey, at least it is rational.

I can't believe anyone would defend this clown. His previous statements have been the usual unhinged crap but now he goes for straight up blatant racism. Rand Paul was right to condemn him, and shame on those who didn't.

And for those of us who have legitimate beef with Obama's actions as president, this kind of thing is especially damaging because it gives yet more fuel to the Obamaphiles who say there's racism behind all our critiques. Complete rot, of course, but Nugent's bigoted crap just gives them ammo.

And while Nugent shouldn't be relevant politically--nor should any other entertainer--he certainly gets more respect from Republicans than he deserves. He's been on the campaign trail for Greg Abbott in TX, and was a congress mans guest at a state of the union speech. Wonderful. What, are they actually trying to get 0% of the black vote? Is this what has become of the party of Lincoln?

The comment was just plain disgusting. Obama should be shamed for many things but his race isn't one of them. And any complaints that "the Democrats do this too!" --well, that's supposed to excuse it?

Matthew Sablan,

"It implies ALL Republicans are secret racists, yearning for the day they can return to their KKK/Democrat roots."

I don't think that's true - we speak colloquially - I just pointed out to Ann today (on the thread about climate change) how lame that criticism is because it doesn't address the problem at all.

Are "all" Republicans racist? Of course not, but have they made a home for racists to hide in? Most definitely, and if they're not about rooting them out, we're done.

"That's... it's just not rational, or logical. I don't care about "winning" a political argument. I'm trying to honestly understand the people putting *forward* the flawed arguments. What is the difference they see? Am I -missing- their logic? Have I overlooked something -- or is it really just a flaccid attempt at poisoning the well?"

You're missing their argument, which can summed up by saying MLK told us to leave the Republican Party until it rooted out it's racists. It hasn't. It has preferred to deny they're there. This won't work any longer. We're done debating it. I'm still a Republican but I've been withholding my vote.

"I want to understand; I'm not going to get that way by trying to pretend like a bad argument is a good one. The argument is flawed; it is not well founded. Until I can see WHY it is well founded, I see no reason to do anything else with the argument BUT question it."

George Bush: "If you're not with us, you're with the terrorists." Shout the racists down. Make them crawl out of their holes and chop their heads off. If you're letting your fellow man suffer, just to protect a principle, what good is it? I'm supposed to follow "Republicans don't attack Republicans" but fuck that - the shit's got to stop. Sitting with the people playing cat-and-mouse with race, and then saying you won't do anything but heckle their marks, because they (mistakenly?) said "everybody" was in on it, doesn't make much logical sense, either, does it?

"Think of it like a game; if I can beat a game only using one move -- why learn the rest? The argument "All Republicans are secret racists," is just a chant, some sort of little meme or mnemonic device or social signalling -- it can't be what people REALLY believe."

No, you're extrapolating to much from it. We are products of a culture. A culture we don't like to face. A culture that, to a large extent, has been hidden to us.

"Or, if it is, I want to know WHY."

They believe it because it's true - this IS a racist country. It can't be avoided. The Dems have their brand of it as well. But, right now, the Republican flavor is making a lot of head-way - for the Democrats - so, if you give a damn about the Right, those of us trying to get us back on the right side of history (freed the slaves, etc.) need your help.

Many of the Panthers had a side job as an FBI informant against other party members and as general snitches against rival drug gang members and pimps.

What in the hell Crack's looking for is anybody's guess.

The Mau-Mauers always say that there's just one more debt to be collected from Whitey, but a new debt always appears in the place of the old one.

That gamble, that the party could lie down with this country's racists, is now paying off.

The Democrats defended slavery, and split this country in two to try and defend it. The Republican Party was formed to oppose slavery.

The Republicans wrote and passed the Civil Rights Amendments, which were opposed by the Democrats.

Democrats imposed Jim Crow and segregation on Blacks and lynched Blacks for decades.

All those governors and cops keeping Blacks out of White schools, and setting dogs and fire hoses on Blacks were Democrats.

Democrats want to treat Black people as a group defined by their color, Republicans want to treat them as individuals.

But the Republicans are the racists..........

Gee, I quote exactly what Igna(ramus) said Sharpton said, and even started my comment with an "IF", and that's not good enough for Igna. If she thought other parts were more pertinent, maybe she should have quoted them.

I read the linked piece: he said a lot of harsh things about the knockout game, but there are two huge gutless evasions:

(a) He summed up at the end by calling it "cowardly", which misses the point entirely, as I have pointed out, and the headline goes along with that.

(b) His suggestions for dealing with the problem are pathetic: "These kids must be held accountable, and then they must receive the right guidance and mentorship to halt any further damage." These "kids" don't need "guidance" after they've killed or maimed someone, they need to be in jail for a long time. Guidance is for those who are thinking of taking up the knockout "game". Seeing those who have already done so go to jail would be better guidance than a tough talking-to from someone with Sharpton's record.
