"Schumer Drops by Graduations to Tell Same 'Loser' Story."

"New York Senator Often Arrives Unadvertised but Colleges Aren't Complaining; 'It's a Tradition.'"
... Schumer often recites a variation on the same story, in which he turned down a scholarship to travel abroad after graduating from Harvard to spend time with his then-girlfriend, who subsequently dumped him.

"There I was: no scholarship, no trip around the world, no girl. I said to myself, 'What a loser you are'"...

And he is right.

Nothing he has done in the intervening time period has changed that assessment, as far as I can see.

And then I thought, "I should share my loser-ness with others. It's a gift and I should share it widely."

So, he was right, once.

Wow. First and probably last time I will ever agree with Chuck Shumer...

He's been doing this for years. He did it at my daughter's graduation from a SUNY school a decade ago. What a nightmare. It was hot, we had already been sitting for too long under the sun beating down on us in the unprotected stadium, and the ceremony had already been quite long enough, with several speakers who had droned on too long but had at least kept the focus on the students and their future rather than themselves. Everyone was heaving sighs of relief as we approached the end of the printed program agenda, with nothing left but the handing over of diplomas to the graduates that we had come to see -- but lo! a helicopter buzzed overhead. Shortly thereafter this politico marches onto the stage to talk and talk and talk and talk about how every single thing that ever happened is all about him him him. Yes, he was funny, in that self-involved way that many canned comics are funny. He truly believed we were all sitting there in that sun just waiting to celebrate HIS accomplishments rather than those of our children. What an unmitigated jerk.

A couple of years later our son graduated from a different New York college. As before, Schumer's name was not on the program. We cringed in fear as the ceremony approached its end -- but thank goodness, this time he didn't show.

Telling the same loser story year after year, what a loser you are!

I scrolled through a considerable number of comments. There was not a single favorable one.......I await the Althouse postings for balance and recognition of this man's many virtues.

When he was a little kid I'm sure Schumer would often run around banging pots and pans together while screaming "PAY ATTENTION TO MEEE EVERYONE!!"

I was at a Fordham graduation about ten years ago. When he got up to spoke, I noted he was not on the agenda and figured he was crashing the event like the typical librul arrogant schmuck that he is.

Tim Russert was the invited speaker that year.

He is a politician and this is what politicians do. They are NY schools and he is one of the Senators from NY. Are politicians sometimes louts? Sure but he isn't a terrible person for doing it (he is a terrible person for some of his political views). The dude keeps getting re-elected because he does stuff like this.

It is an interesting story and just goes to show you that these guys are performers.

It's rude to show up uninvited. For those who give him a standing invitation, it's rude not to let them know you aren't coming this year.

That said, is there any evidence his tale is true? Sounds like a bullshit story to me.

I saw him once at a crowded street fair, walking through the middle of it with two aides in front of him holding signs that said "Meet Senator Schumer!" Everyone ignored him.

As Mrs. Whatsit said, it tends to be damn hot and too long at these graduations.

There are five (5) comments before your comment. Considerable number?

Leftists are always welcome on an ad hoc basis on any University campus.

Conservatives/Liberatarians not so much.

Because "tolerance".

" There are five (5) comments before your comment." Perhaps the comments at the original article ? There are ,currently, 100.

Now, regarding the senator. who is at all surprised ?

Did Schumer subsequently sic the IRS on his "then-girlfriend", too?

William: Well... Chuck Schumer isn't nearly as bad as Hitler.

That's a virtue, right?

Schumer, a loser, yes, but watch out, a savvy "loser" who knows how to play his cards.
Bob Dole said the shortest distance in Washington was between Schumer and a television camera.

As it happens, in Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle none other than the great Gwyn Paltrow says the line "Somebody pay attention to me" in melodrama style, fitting the character quite nicely.

A character says to her character: Take good care of your body, when it's gone you'll have nothing left.

Truly the most dangerous place in the world is the one between Chuck Schumer and a microphone.

"So I became a Democrat US Senator."

There hasn't been a decent NY senator since Patrick Moynihan. And he was a Democrat of all things.

Same here! It was several years ago at the Riverhead County Fair. There were a few people stopping by, not many. I briefly considered it but was more interested in the antique steam engines on exhibit.

When I made my first comment, I was talking about the original article. It's good to see that a commenter here was willing to stick his neck out and say that in some ways Schumer was not as bad asHitler.......I live in NYC. I have never heard anyone, even liberals, make a favorable comment about Chuck Schumer and yet he continues to win elections.

Hmm, I wonder what the reaction would be if it was known Condi Rice was hovering above in a helicopter about to land at a NY state college graduation.

"What happened to me could happen to anybody," he said. The lesson to be drawn, he said, is "you can move forward and be successful in life when you've had setbacks."

Very inspirational. There he was, no vacation in Europe and no girlfriend. Nothing to fall back on but his degree from Harvard. Its a everyman story.
