"As you know I have been campaigning on a platform of Prosperity Through Peace..."

No, I didn't know, and there's so much more I'll never know about the genial old man who wandered onto the debate stage, Lincoln Chafee...
"But after much thought I have decided to end my campaign for president today,” he added, as the crowd lightly groaned. “Thank you. I would like to take this opportunity one last time to advocate for a chance be given to peace."
Stop all your light groaning and cue the music...  All we are saying is that a chance be given to peace...

Lincoln Chafee: Answer to a question nobody asked...

"Since today is all about women’s leadership it reminds me of one of my favorite Greek plays: Lysistrata, a comedy from about 400 BCE by Aristophanes,” he said, to chuckles. "In that play, a group of women, fed up with the war mongering of their husbands, agree to — how do I put this delicately? — withhold their favors until peace returns. And it worked..

So if Denis Thatcher had withheld his stud services, Margaret never would have invaded the Falklands? And Indira and Golda's husband must have also been remiss?

In other words, we are the warmongers. Peace will happen if we stop starting wars.
I can understand someone saying, It's not our responsibility to be the world's policeman, and it turns out it's not within our power.
But for someone to say, if we just stop, so will Putin and Syria and ISIS and Iran - I dunno. Is he headed back to an insane asylum now?

It is high time that Dems drop their sham and pretenses. It is now clear that they are uniting behind Hillary and that she is the very best that Dems can offer. Henceforth, Republican candidates will be judged by how well they plan to oppose her. This will be a tough hoe to row for Donald Trump.

Yes, that will fix it, and us for all time.

Well, at least he didn't say his platform was "Peace in our time." Let alone "Joy through strength."

It wouldn't work that way. Women are more complex and less childish than men, generally, and certainly less slaves to their sex drives than men.

Yes, of course. Did you think otherwise?

"Peace will happen if we stop starting wars."

There will be fewer wars if we stopped starting them, and fought only wars of self-defense. (Gee, that would take us back to WWII...and before that...?)

I find it sad that the idea of Peace provokes sarcasm and scoffing.

Nope. Can't do it.

Such "Peace" included 1.5 million dead. It really was a wonder why we weren't eager to embrace it.

Peace was active in the 60s.

Now, peace has become passive.

It wouldn't work the way Chafee meant it either.

His statement was absurdly antiquated and sexist. There are plenty of women that are hawks and there are also plenty of naive, dewey-eyed male pacifists, Chafee being one.

Both of his supporters were saddened by the announcement. Changing parties is not the road to success.

Robert Cook: When I think socialism, I think peace. Have the countries where socialists comprise a majority of the 'peace' and human freedom parties been more peaceful than those that haven't?

Can you plan out individuals' freedom for them, soon denying it, and make more long-term peace?

Lincoln Chafee: When I think good governance, I think Providence. Peace between unions and some genuine mobsters, taxpayers and recipients, people who work and people who don't.

in order to get in on that liberal Democratic mojo (Republican, for that matter) you've got to aim for brand-name glamour, Kennedy-style...Bill Clinton smooth...or the best young black Senator etc.

White guy isn't 'cool' anymore.

You'd think that if we white guys were supposed to you know, run the world as a Patriarchy for our sole benefit oppressing all the women and peoples of color, that we'd have more respect, more power and more fun.

Sgt: I'd say enough generations of victim/oppressor chic, some radical and other less radical changes have tilted enough of the culture towards such a view, enough to frame who gets elected and who doesn't these days.

I'll see you at the next 'Meeting Of The Patiarchs' which may be a kids' baseball game, or getting gas on the way to work.

Wrong. Men and women an equal in all things. Equalist denier.

Nobody took this guy seriously. I'm betting the DNC put him up to running so as to dim the lights on the "Hillary coronation" storyline a bit. Make it look like she had a little bit of competition. Not sure if the same happened with Webb, but he's out too. He'll never raise enough dough to make a run as an Independent - not a serious one, at least - and so it's back to Hillary versus Marty versus Bernie, the 20th Century 3 Stooges for the 21st Century.

Democrats can somehow look at these three, an inveterate liar and aging con artist, an awful city councilman turned awful mayor turned awful governor, and a fossilized reckless handout huckster, and somehow see Presidential material. But, then again, they saw the same in John Edwards. They saw the same in Al Gore. Pervert hucksters both, one shucking his decency against a wife dying of cancer and in courtrooms suing doctors in a multitude of bogus cases, the other being publicly described as a "sex crazed poodle" (now there's a manly vision) and also shilling carbon credits and a fairytale about climate change.

Screw 'em. Hillary ain't gonna win the election. Bernie ain't gonna win the election.

Feeble rentboys like Once Written and Garage Mahal haven't caught on to this yet. But they will.

Wrong. Women do everything men do, and they can even do it backwards and in high heels. While giving birth!

To be completely fair, now that Webb is gone, Bernie is the only halfway honest Dem candidate left...

Less than ten years ago he was a Republican (and switched parties because he felt elective office should be a sinecure). It's hardly surprising Democrats didn't trip over themselves getting out to support him. Even in a field that includes Jim Gilmore and George Pataki there is no one in the race whose candidacy makes less sense than Chafee.

I'm reading A World Undone by G. J. Meyer. It's a detailed history of the battles of WWI. There were battles that cost hundreds of thousands of lives and moved the front a mile or two in a different direction. The generals counted some of those battles as victories because they killed a few thousand more men than the other team. Madness. All those millions of men died for no good reason in squalor and futility. The pacificists were right about WWI.......Or maybe not. Russia's preemptive withdrawal from WWI and the triumph of the Bolsheviks triggered a civil war in that country which caused several magnitudes more casualties than its preceding involvement in WWI......War seems hard wired into the human condition. What is malleable and subject to social conditioning is our affection for certain warriors and their causes, The left's pacifism seems strangely muted when it comes to struggles that they approve of. You will read about the heroism and beautiful deaths off those who fought on the Loyalist side during the Spanish Civil War, but their deaths were just as futile as those that happened at the Somme. The Viet Cong's long struggle to establish crony capitalism in Vietnam is never mocked, but they were bigger fools than the poilus.

Bernie is now just a VP lackey. The die is cast. There is no going back or forward now. She's got a lock.

The best thing about Chafee dropping out will be a bye-ku composed by James Taranto in either today's or tomorrow's WSJ - Best of the Web Today.

War is the human condition. When there's no big wars going on, there's almost always little ones happening somewhere. Throughout history, conflict is the constant. And yet life goes on for the majority of the human race.

Eventually, Syria and Iraq will settle down or be put down by someone else, and the conflict will move elsewhere. Whether it's border skirmishes, nascent rebel groups and criminal gangs, or all-out multi-theater combined arms nuclear boogaloo, war is part of human survival strategy. It's nature and nurture all wrapped up into one adorably hairless four limbed vertebrate with his finger on a button that can send a steel robot powered by a controlled explosion hurtling through the air at 5 times the speed of sound to hit a man controlling a steel bird of prey who lurks somewhere over the horizon.

No other creature is this creative and clever when it comes to wiping out their fellows.
