"Oh, brother - if more and better tape emerges proving this was a bum rap on Lewandowski delivered by fellow sure to be characterized as a Trump-bashing media elitist, then yike."

"Even paranoids have real enemies, and even righties have real fears about a hostile media. Not Helpful to run towards the flames with a can of gasoline. DISCLOSURES: I am #NeverTrump with a long history of distrusting the media, so take a moment to imagine my angst... UPDATE... Unless C Lew and the security guy have extraordinary footwork I don't see how C Lew grabs Fields on her left arm without blocking the security guy. OTOH, the security guy could easily grab Fields' left arm, drag her back, and slide right by...."

Either you know what that's about or you don't. But steel yourself for endless he-hit-me stories from the press (as they jostle for position and feel roughed up) and from protesters at political rallies who get right where they only need to provoke one intemperate Trump enthusiast to make trouble for the politician they hate.

There is an audio recording of the incident on politico.com site. Listening to the voice of the journalist allegedly severely mishandled by Lewandowski gives interesting insight - there is no fear/stress/pain/raised heartbeat detectable in her voice.

So, yes, probably Lewandowski pulled her off Trump leaving marks on her arm, but the incident is presented as brutal attack which simply doesn't add up when listening to the tape.

Yikes, how dare Drudge question the faith of Ted Cruz?! Of course I'm being sarcastic. I find it very odd, but that is my opinion. When I was 9, in 1968, my mom took me to a Nixon rally. In early September. In North Carolina. At 1pm. It was about 110F in the mall parking lot where we waited for 3 hours for Nixon to arrive, but I had a prime spot at the front of the ropeline where the Secret Service agents told us Nixon would be shaking hands. So I persevered. I was about to shake the hand of the next president.

Nixon finally arrived, exited his car, and walked directly toward me. I reached out my hand to shake his, and... he reached over my head to shake the hand of an eligible voter behind me, instead of silly 9 year old me. My head ended up under Nixon's suit jacket, jammed into his very sweaty armpit. He moved on, oblivious to the outrage he had perpetrated upon me. I was no longer a Nixon supporter.

I remember the day he resigned, and how glad I felt about his ignominy. The rat f**king, lying presidential bastard.

May the Trump supporters never know the anger, the hatred, the disdain I have for Nixon. And may they never shove a protester by accident.

Apparently, in addition to attacking the 1st, 2nd, 5th and 14th amendment rights of fellow citizens the lefties are running pell mell into putting more emphasis on mere speculation that that which is verifiable to some extent via physical evidence.

Lewandowsky reaching for Michelle Fields

Deny, deny, deny is harder to do nowadays with with so many people videoing everything. What would be Michelle Field's purpose in lying about this? She works for Breitbart for pity sake.

Anonymous said...

Team Blue? I've said I would've voted for Kasich over Hillary if he had gotten the nomination. Last I noticed Kasich is a Republican.

Chuck said...

1. The incident happened. About that, there seems to be no doubt. There's a split, with Donald Trump recklessly claiming that Michelle Fields may have made it up; and with his spokeslady acknowledging that it did happen in a conversation with the press.

2. It may be a case of mistaken identity. If so, the "mistaker" is Washington Post reporter Ben Terris. As a reporter, WaPo-grade, who knows both Fields and Lewandowski on a first-name basis, standing within a couple steps from both, Ben Terris is an unlikely mistaker. And, as of a few hours ago, Ben Terris is not backing down:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/erik-wemple/wp/2016/03/11/washington-post-reporter-rebuts-breitbart-story-about-possible-mistaken-identity-in-michelle-fields-incident/

3. From the perspective of Michelle Fields, having reported the incident as she experienced it, and having relied on the statement of Ben Terris as to who the perpetrator was, she has done and said nothing wrong.

4. On the Trump campaign side of things there is all of this: first is Trump's statement that Michelle Fields may be making it all up. That is clearly wrong. Then there was the Twitter attack by a large handful of Trump goons and supporters, all attacking Michelle Fields personally. If anybody wants to debate those, let's get it on. They were bogus, untrue assertions against Michelle. What we learned from them basically was that Trump's vicious counterattack mechanism is locked and loaded at all times.

5. The very best case scenario for Trump will be -- and we do not know if this is true -- that the other guy in the video(s) was a Secret Service agent whose rough treatment of Michelle Fields was legally protected. And, of course, that Corey Lewandowski is innocent. I hope that's not the case, but it might be. If Ben Terris sticks to his story, and is vindicated, it will be a very, very bad day for Trump, his campaign and Lewandowski.

Xmas said...

For anyone interested, Breitbart's been posting more and more versions of the incident. Somehow in that panopticon, there are no photos or video of someone touching the reporter.

http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2016/03/11/trump-presser-ben-terris-misidentified/

The in the CSPAN sequence,it looks like there would be plenty of mobile phone photos from the opposite angle which could show the actual contact. The tiny image that MPH posted is there as a larger image, and there's no way at 0:08 of the video that he could have grabbed her.

Lewandowsky reaching for Michelle Fields...

No. The video shows him reaching toward her. Maybe he is reaching for her. Maybe he is pointing her out to the security person because he is concerned about her.

I expect we will get definitive video at some point. We don't have it yet.

Sammy Finkelman said...

Unless this is a big hoax, it seems established that Corey Lewandowski did it, and there is a cover-up in place because Breitbart.com, the organization that Michelle Fields works for (she was substituting for someone else that day) is behind Trump.

There is both a picture of the bruise and some audio of the incident, in which she said, live, taht she thought it was Corey Lewandowski who had done that.

Corey Lewandowski said on twitter that she was totally delusional. An innocent person would more probably have said that it wasn't him, but some other person was the bad guy and he apolofgized for the campaign.

Patterico has been writing a lot about this. This is his latest:

The transcript goes:

(Terris is Washington Post reporter Ben Terris)

Fields: “Mr. Trump, you went after the late Scalia for affirmative action, do you -- are you still against affirmative action?"

Voice (allegedly Corey Lewandowski): “Excuse me, thank you.”

A few moments later (noise of the room can be heard)...

Terris: “You OK?"

Fields: “Holy sh*t."

Terris: “Yea he just threw you down."

Fields: “I can’t believe he just did that that was so hard. Was that Corey?"

Terris: “Yeah, like, what threat were you?"

Fields: "That was insane. You should have felt how hard he grabbed me. That's insane. I’ve never had anyone do that to me from a campaign."

Terris: “Can I put that in my story?"

Fields: “Yeah, go for it — that was really awful. That’s so unprofessional.”

Terris: “He really just almost threw you down on the ground."

Fields: “He literally went like this and was grabbing me down. "I don’t even want to do what he just did to me. Oh my God, that really spooked me that someone would do that."

Terris: “What threat were you?"

Fields: “Nothing. I was asking about affirmative action."

Terris: “And he probably knows you, right?"

Fields: “Yeah, I don’t understand. That looks horrible. You’re going after a Breitbart reporter, the people who are nicest to you?"

Terris: “I know, I’m going to put it in my story."

The two stop talking. Din/noise of people talking, glasses clinking continue through end of the recording.

The vast majority of people don't care about this at all. It's almost the definition of a "non story." Now that the weekend is here, this will go down the memory hole.

Grabbing someone's arm will not be the incident that prevents Trump from winning the nomination and then the presidency.

In my opinion, this would be a bad time for the Trump campaign to suddenly start bending to media demands. Let's assume that his campaign manager did it. Trump could say, "He did it and I don't care." Folks who won't vote for him will continue to not vote for him. The folks who will vote for him, will vote for him.

Regardless of how this turns out, it won't be changing anyone's mind about the candidates.

Donald Trump was not objecting to the question. Corey Lewandowski took it upon himself to interrupt the question.

My question is:

Do you think Corey Lewandowski is going to fire Donald Trump???

Corey Lewandowski is also the guy who, during the Thursday, March 3, 2016 Republican debate, went on statge during a commercial and started speaking to Trump or something, s against the debate rules for the candidate to connsult anyone, and then wouldn't walk off the stage when asked to by Fox so that Fox News decided
that the fair thing to do was to let aides of the other candidates also talk to them.

It was suspected by some be Corey Lewandowski gave Donald Trump some

There are two people who might have grabbed her arm very hard, hard enough to leave bruises, and pulled her down.

One of them is a consultant by trade who manages campaigns.

The other one is paid to provide security and is probably physically imposing.

Hmm... Most o the people on this board both have an axe to grind and have no understanding of how this would actually happen. The average person is not going to leave bruises by grip alone. I don't think Lewandowski is a gym rat.

The person paid to provide security was closer to her and had an actual job to do. Lewandowski would have had to push past that person, grab her and throw her to the ground and move back.

I think people are trying way too hard.

These days it's not candidates who fire campaign staff but campaign staff who fire candidates. Ben Carson's staff fired him the day of the Iowa caucuses but he refused to go, and stayed for another four weeks. Chris Christie's staff fired him the day after the New Hampshire primary and told him to endorse Trump. Till about a day or two ago, Marco Rubio's staff was trying to fire him.

Donald Trump really does have to worry that Corey Lewandowski could fire him. That's why he is backing him up.

Sammy:

Since you brought up the story (recalled accurately on your part) about Lewandowski's production of that BBB "A" rating report at the debate...

We now know, after further digging, that the reason that the Trump Entrepreneur Initiative (the successor name that Trump University went to, after they were told many times to quit using the deceptive title "university" for their non-certified unchartered thing) ever got an "A" rating is because the enterprise was a newly-named entity, and at the time of the report that newly-named entity had no complaints against it. BBB gives grades based on the number and the nature of complaints.

And the reason for zero complaints, which produced the "A" rating, is because Trump University a/k/a Trump Entrepreneur Initiative had no students. No students = no complaints. No complaints = "A" rating.

It seems to me that there are plenty of people upset at Trump for upsetting the apple cart. Or perhaps their own rice bowl. Some of them might be upset enough/deranged enough to try to kill him.

Ditto every other presidential candidate for the past 100 or more years.

If I were one of Trump's (or any other candidate's) close people, and I saw someone moving toward him/her without knowing the intentions, I would probably body slam them.

I can always apologize if the person's actions were innocent. I would much rather do that than have to deal with a dead or injured candidate.

Just like with a cop. If you are going to be around a candidate, be sure everyone can see your hands and move slowly. Do NOT give even a hint of being threatening in anyone else's mind.

I don't know what happened here but even if Lewendowsky did grab her arm, so what? Even if he did throw her to the floor, so what? It does not seem to have been done maliciously.

I trust that Trump has good security. Probably his own team plus the SS as backups. And if I were him, the SS would be backups, not primary. They have fucked up too much and too often in recent years to be trustworthy. They just do not seem competent.

Who here would plead guilty in a court of law based on the evidence presented, for example, a photo of an anonymous arm with bruises? Of course that arm belonged to Michelle Fields - because it was included in the presentation. Such association is all the proof one needs.

It’s becoming increasingly evident that Corey Lewandowski is innocent of throwing anyone down. The Breitbart reporter indicated she did not know who it was, which I find odd. If someone grabs my arm I’m going to know who the hell it is. The whole narrative is based upon the word of one person: another reporter.

In general reporters do not like Trump. In general reporters love a juicy story. And in general eyewitness accounts are notoriously unreliable.

As far as I can tell Trump has not hired private security as personal guards since he qualified for Secret Service. Private security would just be in the way. The folks who corral and eject the protestors are local cops. They are in the stands, not guarding Trump. The reporter was likely grabbed and shoved away by the Secret Service. But that would not be a negative for Trump or as juicy a story since the Secret Service is an arm of the Obama administration. Ah, temptation!

I also find it odd that so many cable cameras failed to catch the incident. They all seemed to have managed to miss it entirely – with footage just before, footage just after, worthless footage that shows her going down but we cannot see who grabbed her. How oddly convenient.

Until I see some definitive, clear footage this all adds up for me as total bullshit.

Trump was moving through the crowd answering questions from reporters. Someone grabbed her arm strongly enough to leave a bruise and pulled her away from the candidate and she fell to the ground. Right? I mean, the videos people are showing do show that within a few feet of the candidate, a reporter doing her job was grabbed by someone. And all that seems to matter here is whether it was Trump's campaign manager or a security guard. So someone needs to explain something to me--- why is it okay either way? Why is "oh, never mind, it was really a security guard who grabbed her and injured her and tried to prevent her from peacefully and respectfully doing her job. That's okay" an appropriate response? Why should I NOT be outraged on her behalf? Because she is a reporter, that is, a part of the media? Have we really sunk that low, that we are not suppose to defend the right of people to do their job without being roughed up in the process? Why should I not be concerned that Trump's response is to say "I think she made it up" instead of "I will look into what happened and we will take care of it"?

Chuck said...

ella: I have to say; one possibility that you haven't considered is that the "grabber" was a United States Secret Service Agent. So there's that. No vicarious liability for Trump; all sorts of legal discretion in the use of force; immunity from suit; etc.

But if it was Corey Lewandowski -- and the battle lines are getting drawn pretty deep at this point -- then there is a vast amount of Trump Tomfoolery to answer for.

Professor Althouse: I knew this would be a lively topic when I emailed you! ;-)

Darn, what a time for my long response to get eaten by the machine. Let me try again and I'll make it shorter this time around:

Yes, Chuck, I recognize it is possible that the person would grabbed the reporter was a secret service agent. I will concede that point. i will also, however, state that, applying occam's razor, I find it highly unlikely that it was. Either the manager or a security person has a different agenda, to varying degrees, than a secret service agent. Why would an agent bruise a reporter? It is the agent's duty to protect the candidate. So the agent would be trained to respond to an incident in which he suspected someone had a weapon (not the case here), was physically menacing the candidate (again, not the case), was verbally abusive and out of control (not the case), or was acting strangely or otherwise presented a security danger (nope). I have neither seen nor heard anything to indicate that anyone witnessed the reporter doing anything that might raise the suspicions of a trained secret service agent.

But let's say that an agent was less than professional and did indeed cause that bruise on the reporter's arm. I would still argue that Mr. Trump should handle it basically the same way I mentioned earlier, which is the exact opposite of how he has actually chosen to handle it. He could easily say, "I will ask the secret service if they were involved and if they had any reason for having done that. And if there was not a good reason for such behavior, I will ask that agent be reassigned away from my detail." He could still insist that his campaign is trying to find out what happened and will work to be sure nothing similar happens in the future. He could, in other words, act like a grown-up, like a person who wants to be the president of the United States. I am not at all surprised that he has not done that. He doesn't have it in him. He is a petty, vulgar, little man and he could not care less about what actually happened to that reporter.

@ellamentary: It should be obvious in this anti-Trump climate that the possibility exists for a reporter to inject herself in the campaign to raise her stature -- Candy Crowley is a perfect example of that behavior.

I don't know if that's the case, and maybe it's exactly as Fields described, but there are a lot of conflicting stories out there and they will eventually play out.

"As far as I can tell Trump has not hired private security as personal guards since he qualified for Secret Service. Private security would just be in the way. "

That's incorrect. At least several of Trump's private security agents are still on the case. The most noticeable one, always hovering around, is probably the guy that threw Jorge Ramos out of the Trump show a number of months ago -- before Trump had Secret Service protection. It's the guy who looks like a character from the Adam's Family who was also responsible for roughing up some peaceful demonstrators outside the Trump NYC building a number of months ago. Following that incident he was described on TV as "head" of Trump's security. Several members of the Trump organization were quoted as saying that he's an all round good fellow, so maybe that incident was an out-of-character lapse. He also, apparently, totes Trump's golf bag from time to time.

And all that seems to matter here is whether it was Trump's campaign manager or a security guard. So someone needs to explain something to me--- why is it okay either way?

To point out the obvious: It’s not OK either way.

If it’s Secret Service that did the grabbing Trump is not at fault since Trump does not dictate Secret Service behavior. The Secret Service is an arm of the Obama administration. Obama’s supposed to be responsible for them, not Trump. But that would not have been a juicy story.

We have no way of knowing the Secret Service’s side of the story since they do not publicly comment about security procedures. For all we know the SS received intelligence that there might be an assassination attempt.

If it was private security then presumably Trump hired them and would be somewhat at fault. But it wasn’t. Trump has had Secret Service protection for weeks now.

I have neither seen nor heard anything to indicate that anyone witnessed the reporter doing anything that might raise the suspicions of a trained secret service agent.

The reporter was trying to slow and impede the progress of a presidential candidate trying to leave so she could ask a question and part of the Secret Service’s job is clear the escape lane. The more crowded a situation is the easier the assassination. The Secret Service is trained to be suspicious of everyone.

And if there was not a good reason for such behavior, I will ask that agent be reassigned away from my detail.

If I were Trump I would not be too eager to cause a reprimand to one of a tightly-knit group of men in charge of protecting me. Maybe next time they won’t grab the arm and Trump gets shot.

At least several of Trump's private security agents are still on the case.

And the commentor knows this … how? Is he intimately familiar with the identity and duties of Trump’s close associates? I think not.

The most noticeable one, always hovering around, is probably the guy that threw Jorge Ramos out of the Trump show a number of months ago -- before Trump had Secret Service protection.

And that “probably the guy that threw Jorge Ramos out … ” is weak. I’m not much impressed with stuff people “probably” know. Speaking of the Jorge Ramos incident. When I saw that tape of Ramos being put out was when I became a Trump supporter. Witnessing a public figure finally stand up to an asshole like that was deeply satisfying.

I'm not real sure. Perhaps the Trump Suckers reaction to the protesters will enlighten some people. Probably not, but one can always hope.

I've not been to a Trump rally and don't intend to ever attend one. But, back in 1968 I did attend a George Wallace event in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. I don't have real clear memories of it other than that Wallace was pretty light on his feet when dodging fruits and vegetables. He was probably more nimble than Trump would be. Of course, in later years, after his kicking-hippies-asses days were brought to an unceremonious end, Wallace was not nearly as nimble.

And again, I like clear facts and solid legalisms like that. I liked the clear facts that Trump Steaks, Trump Magazine, Trump Vodka, Trump Airlines and Trump University were all aout of business. I liked the clear legalism that the U.S. Armed forces didn't target families of illegal enemy combatants. I liked the legalism that the U.S. didn't pose religious tests for entry into the country, in the 21st century.

But Scott Adams corrected me:

Last year I teased you in this blog by saying Trump would change more than politics and more than the Republican party. Trump will change how you view human beings in general. His complete disregard for facts is irrelevant to the outcome of the race because he knows humans don’t use facts to make decisions. They use emotion.

"Mr. Trump just arrived in Chicago, and after meeting law enforcement, has determined that for the safety of all the tens of thousands of people that have gathered in and around the arena tonight's rally will be postponed until another date," the man said from a podium. "Thank you very much for your attendance, and please go in peace."

However, a Chicago police spokesperson told CBS News there were no meetings between police and the Trump campaign about security.

CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told the Associated Press that police never told the Trump campaign there was a security threat at the venue. He said the department had sufficient manpower on the scene to handle any situation.

Guglielmi said the university's police department also did not recommend that Trump call off the event. The decision was made "independently" by the campaign, according to Guglielmi.

Cruz said blame for the unrest Friday rests with the protesters but "in any campaign responsibility starts at the top."

He added, "When the candidate urges supporters to engage in physical violence, to punch people in the face, the predictable consequence of that is that is escalates. Today is unlikely to be the last such incidence.""

http://www.politico.com/story/2016/01/hillary-clinton-george-soros-218494

"George Soros in December donated $6 million to the leading super PAC supporting Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, marking the return of the billionaire financier as among the biggest givers in all of American politics.
The massive check brings to $8 million the Hungarian-born investor's total 2015 giving to pro-Clinton groups."

Pm317, perhaps you are unaware that George Soros backs your hero Hillary Clinton. Speaking out of both sides of your mouth again.

Show of hands; who is old enough to remember the Chicago Democratic Convention of 1968?

I am.
And I also remember that Nixon won the election.

Watching attempts to get on camera comments from the protesters. What a bunch of imbeciles.

This one isn't Chicago 1968.
It's still early though.
What will it be next month?
What will the conventions be?
And that certainly doesn't cover all possible events.

I liked what Rubio said on Kevyn Kelly. Cruz not so much. He is trying to make hay.

If a bruise on the arm is enough to create a political firestorm and lead to claims of "brutality", the USA has become PUSSIFIED beyond belief.

If arms-eschewing moveon.org trustafarians don't yet understand the "correlation of forces" concept their Soviet mentors used to push: their opponents in the US have ALL the weapons they need to blow unarmed totalitarians like themselves to bloody gore and tissue.

So if push comes to shove, and shove comes to shoot, only one side will be armed to do the shooting.

No David, Trump stated emphatically that he spoke with Chicago police and on their recommendation he cancel the event. I saw the interview with Chris Matthews and one on CNN, he said that the Chicago police recommended he cancel. Chicago police say they never spoke with him and made no such recommendation.

***************

Yeah. The Chicago police just sat there with their thumbs up their asses.

Sure.

Riiiiiiiiight.

Trump lied about Chicago police and university police. Trump said on Hannity that they strongly recommended he cancel the rally. Chicago police and campus police deny that they even spoke to Trump and didn't recommend the event be cancelled. What a lying sack of shit trump is.

&&&&&&&&&&&

If what you say were true, the Chicago police just committed an act of full-frontal incompetence, because they FAILED to anticipate the violence that occurred.

Just THINK (if you are capable of rubbing two working neurons together), how much worse things could have been if Trump had gone on with his rally.

You're a dull tool. In a drawer of kitchen knives, you would be the clam knife.

To get to the Defcon 4 level of Lefty hysteria, you need something that they can compare to the Reichstag fire. Amanda will back me up on this.

Reichstag fire is coming up.
Inevitable at this rate.

There’s an interesting video at YouTube. The “eyewitness,” Ben Terris, is a Washington Post reporter. It turns out that a Washington Post photographer was present and was shooting images right when the incident occurred. But get this: When contacted by the YouTube-er the photographer, Jabin Botsford, at first denied being at the event. When confronted with the fact of the attribution of his photograph at the event Botsford hurriedly deleted the denial tweet. But the YouTube-er took the sensible precaution of taking screenshots of the tweet by Botsford denying he was present at the event. Readers, watch the video and see for yourselves.

And below are archived screen shots of the tweets in question.

The alleged incident is looking more and more like bullshit and cover-up.

Chuck: "Show of hands; who is old enough to remember the Chicago Democratic Convention of 1968? Who finds tonight reminiscent of that week?"

Chuck, Chicago 1968 was a couple of orders of magnitude worse than what happened tonight. You are confusing television clips with reality.

3/11/16, 10:31 PM"

I remember watching the coverage of the police 'riot'. I was rooting for the cops.

Original Mike said...Apparently a group called "People for Bernie" is responsible for the Chicago riot.

Look at the faces of the perps. Do they look like Bernie people? Them people are drowning in soros.

A cursory examination of a few sources indicates that the purpose of these people was not to protest Trump's appearance, it was to shut it down.
That is a brownshirt tactic. It seems that the losers on the left aren't happy with being able to choose their own candidate for president, they want to choose the opposition candidate as well, and they will not take 'no' for an answer.
This 'not taking no for an answer' seems to be the latest tactic of the totalitarian left. You are expected to abide by laws and court decisions that go against you. They openly refuse to abide by the rule of law. It is the worship of power that is the end result of all socialist movements. At some point they realize that what they want you to do is arbitrary. The more important thing is the ability to make you do it.
