"On Meet The Press Hillary said she'd consider Mark Cuban (or some other non-politician) as possibility for VP, what do you guys think?"

"In an election where people want an outsider to get into Washington and people are attracted to Drumpf because he's a businessman and reality star...could this actually be a good idea? Cuban had some pretty good ideas in his MTP interview."

A Reddit discussion, based on this morning's "Meet the Press," which I've seen and for which I am trying to locate the transcript. There's something else I want to blog and will blog soon, but this is an excellent topic. I don't cotton to calling Trump "Drumpf," but the basic question raised there is one I wanted to ask too. To acknowledge that Cuban is a creditable pick — which Hillary did — is to throw out one of your main arguments against Trump.

ADDED: Ah! Here's the transcript. Here's the part about Cuban:
CHUCK TODD: And I know you're not going to reveal how you're vetting for a running mate....

SEC. HILLARY CLINTON: Well, the most important thing is to pick someone who you have absolute confidence in can be president....

CHUCK TODD: Mark Cuban.

SEC. HILLARY CLINTON: Yes. Yes--

CHUCK TODD: I did a interview with him earlier. He expressed serious interest [in the VP position]. If you called him up and said, "I want to vet you to be my running mate," he'd listen. What do you say to that?

SEC. HILLARY CLINTON: I think we should look widely and broadly. It's not just people in elective office. It is successful businesspeople. I am very interested in that. And I appreciate his openness to it. I think that--

CHUCK TODD: You do plan on having people that maybe have never served in elected office, that you're going to vet--

SEC. HILLARY CLINTON: I am absolutely intending to look far and wide. And I think that is the best way to find somebody who can really capture what's needed in the country, and businesspeople have, especially successful businesspeople who are really successful as opposed to pretend successful, I think have a lot to offer.
At this where she's conceded that it's possible to "have absolute confidence" that a person with only a business career could shift to the presidency without any other political experience. The only question seems to be whether that person actually is successful. Todd picks up the cue and makes it about Donald Trump:
CHUCK TODD: Pretend successful? You don't think--

SEC. HILLARY CLINTON: Yeah.

CHUCK TODD: --is there anything Donald Trump's done that you think should be praised?
Now, just to be honest, you have to express admiration for something, don't you? But she needs to fight Donald Trump. That's her main objective, and yet she just made a huuuge concession. If she didn't notice she was doing that, she does now. How can she recover? She shifts to the detail of his tax returns:
SEC. HILLARY CLINTON: I think he needs to release his tax returns. The only two we have show that he hasn't paid a penny in taxes. And yet he goes around talking about "Make America great." You know? That means paying for our military. That means paying for our roads. That means paying for the V.A. That means a lot of things. And if you've got someone running for president who's afraid to release his tax returns, because it will expose the fact that he pays no federal income tax, I think that's a big problem.
So many problems here: 1. She's utterly undercut if he has paid taxes, even at a fairly low rate. 2. She shifts to a subject that could be labeled It's Actually Great to Pay Taxes, 3. It's somewhat fussy detail about paperwork, and she's famous for withholding papers, 4. She couldn't say one thing nice about  the man, which forces Todd, who's otherwise ultra supportive, to ask:
CHUCK TODD: No, my question was there's nothing about his background that is praiseworthy?

SEC. HILLARY CLINTON: We'll find out. Because we have to get below the hype. We have to find what the reality is. And--

CHUCK TODD: You don't feel like you know that?

SEC. HILLARY CLINTON: I don't think the country knows it.

CHUCK TODD: Do you?

SEC. HILLARY CLINTON: I-- I think that we're beginning to find out. But I don't think we know enough. And that's why he should release his tax returns.
So she waffles and hedges and comes right back to the tax returns, as if it all hinges on the tax returns.  That gives Trump all the power. It's like a demonstration of Trump's favorite criticism: She doesn't know how to negotiate.
CHUCK TODD: All right.

SEC. HILLARY CLINTON: Prove that he actually has the level of success he claims to have.
She's demanding that Trump prove that he's a successful businessman. That's his favorite subject!

I think I saw this scene in Back To School, when Rodney Dangerfield is in the back of the class, and he's mocking the professor with real life examples. "You can't sell widgets! Tell that to the bank!" And all the apple-shiners turn around and start taking notes from Rodney Dangerfield.

And hey, I just noticed that Danger is (almost) his middle name!

Rodney Dangerfield, who has crashed into the (Republican) country club, has now invaded academia. He has gone from "I get no respect" to everybody copying his moves. Hillary is basically announcing that she cannot lead. She can only follow.

In the future everybody will be releasing balloons. "Maybe this! Maybe that! What do you think? I'm open to anything."

Exactly. Trump will Judo this move just like the woman card move and the policy (failure) experience move. Almost every claim the woman makes cuts both ways.

They think the Drumpf thing is cute. It's precious really. Like Bushitler. There's plenty wrong with both but if ad hominem is all you have room for in your head I guess that's what you go with.

To acknowledge that Cuban is a creditable pick — which Hillary did — is to throw out one of your main arguments against Trump.

This assumes that Hillary supporters are paying attention, which is no where in evidence. If they were paying attention, they'd be as horrified that HRC is the presumptive nominee as the old-guard Repubs are that Trump is theirs.

What drives Hillary's supporters is the foundational belief that they are the last guardians of political rationality in this whole sorry mess where the rest of the country & the political process has gone bat-shit insane. The simply can't see themselves as also involved in a broken political process. In normal times, a candidate facing a possible FBI indictment for gross security violations & in possession of an impossible to explain massive fortune wouldn't make it out of the starting gate. But, the rules don't apply to their girl Hillary. Which makes her much more like Trump than her supporters care to admit.

In a syllogism here's how Hillary support goes:

I'm a rational & moral person.
I support Hillary.
Therefore, it is rational & moral to support Hillary.

PS: Needless to say, HRC supporters don't have a lock on this sort of flawed logic.

None of this has to do with principles or prudence or credentials. All those things are just rhetorical points or at best rationalizations for reasons that won't bear examination.

What Clinton buys with Cuban is charisma and PR ability. That's worth much more in the real world of power as it exists now than any assumed credentials.

The most important national domestic issue is overspending. The controlling expenses are entlements and interest on debt. We are headed in the direction of Venezuela. The issue is ignored by those delegated to handle it (Legislators) and by the People who elect them.

I have not previously heard of Mark Cuban. Per Wikipedia, he is a businessman and admirer of Ayn Rand. So far, so good. However his business seems mostly to be sports, entertainment, and financial hi-jinks, Not so good.

May have missed it in the transcript, but seems Mark Cuban was a name posited by Chuck Todd, not proposed by Hillary. Hillary said "we should look widely and broadly." Did she actually say, as per Reddit, "I will consider Mark Cuban"?

If I were a career politician (party functionary, superdelegate, etc.) I might take Hillary's remarks that as a career threat. But rationally, no. It will be understood as political B.S. - just another lie she needs to say to get elected.

That illustrates where we are in politics and society today. Politicians have too long promised everything to everybody. The credulous People have trusted Government with the power to provide it. The People are now coming to realize these were largely lies; it cannot be done, and they were dupes to have believe it.

I was just thinking about the problem Clinton is going to have in the general. Normally candidates tack to the center for the general. But she needs to win over Sanders supporters, who really don't like her. Dare she tack to the center and talk about how moderate she is?

Trump, on the other hand, can tack to the center just fine. Ted Cruz supporters and the like just need to hear that he _isn't crazy_; we know he's not as completely liberal as Clinton. If he sounds sane, and moderate, he should get pretty much all conservatives.
That is, the two groups he needs to convince aren't really in conflict, whereas Clinton's are.

Geez she really is bad when speaking extemporaneously! Obama ummms and errrs but manages to say vacuous, empty things that people pretend are meaningful, but in one on one interviews he mostly understands the message he'd like to get out (press conferences are a problem for him, but he compensates by refusing to have them). H. Clinton's just terrible even one on one.

The Left would LOVE to argue that the Repub. candidate is some undeserving white person who inherited wealth and is out of touch (you know, like they claimed about Mitt Romney)...but how can they even begin when they're putting up Hillary?! Her accomplishments, meager as they are, are almost entirely due to her husband!

Can she really attack Trump for not releasing a record? Has she given poor ol' Bernie copies of her speech transcripts yet?

Trump should say he'll follow her example and turn the records she wants over two years after a judge demands them--when they'll be miraculously found in the private residence of the White House after he's elected.

Trump should claim he wants to turn the records over but he's afraid they might contain top secret information and he actually cares about national security.

Trump should say he wanted to publish his tax records but they were kept on a private server and he accidentally deleted them--he thought they were just some yoga routines.

What an election! It's entirely possible these two weird candidates are the only two who could lose to each other...I can't imagine what it must be like in Hillary's inner circle right now to even contemplate the fact (evidenced by some recent polls) that there's a real possibility that he might beat her. Him! Her!!

This strikes me as bizarre for several reasons:

1) Mark Cuban is Trump lite. Similar backgrounds, heading their own businesses, celebrity, reality TV show.

2) Last July there was talk about Trump picking Cuban as his VP. Cuban was saying all sorts of nice things about Trump. Also that he would consider being Trump's VP but probably would not accept. (July 30, 2015)

http://www.businessinsider.com/mark-cuban-donald-trump-vice-president-2015-7

3) Now he is saying that he would be Hilary's VP or Trump's VP but would not vote for Trump. Well, I thought I saw that an hour or two ago but now can't find it.

4) Cuban is accustomed to being in charge of things. The VP job is just the opposite. No executive responsibilities and no executive powers. He would be Ed McMahon to Trump's/Hilary's Johnny Carson. How well do you think that will work out with someone like Cuban.

Smells like desperation on the part of Hilary. I get the feeling, for reasons I can't put my finger on, that Trump let Cuban know a while back that he is not interested in him for VP and that Cuban's feelings are now hurt.

Re Hilary's comments on Trump's taxes:

Is she claiming that he somehow violated tax law or tax code? I did not see that. She seems to be saying that Trump should pay more taxes than he is legally required to.

Why? What would be the logic behind that?

What about Jeff Bezos of Amazon? He is worth about $60 billion yet has an income of about $1.6 million. I assume that he pays full taxes on that income.

Warren Buffet is similar. Net worth of $60-70 billion, pays taxes on about $40-50 million.

Why is Hilary not complaining about them. Oh, yeah. One owns WaPo, the other big contributor.

Buffett and Trump (I think) about the stupidity of the tax code and I think most people agree with them.

As it is now, we pay tax on income. No income, no tax. One of the reasons that Amazon operates at a small profit or loss and pays no dividends. B-H, Buffetts company is very profitable but it too pays no dividends for the govt to tax at the owner level.

I suspect that Trump does all he can to minimize his taxable income. I suspect that he does it legally.

remember when Hilary said, in response to a question about her insurance putting small business out of business?

"I can't be responsible for every undercapitalized business"

She was implying that small businesses would have to shut their doors and she had no qualms about it.

Her statement was stupidity on stilts and showed a lack of even the most basic economic knowledge.

Insurance is an expense paid out of revenue/income. If the company does not have enough income to pay the insurance, it can draw down capital. It might do this in a bad year. It cannot do it year after year, though a really well capitalized company might be able to do it for a few years before running out of money.

Undercapitalized or extremely well capitalized, if a company has to use capital to pay expenses, it will eventually be bankrupt.

They really look stupid, especially that Mayor of Baltimore, Rawlings-Blake. I don;t trust hyphenated women anyway.

She hasn't been exactly grateful for the help she got from the GOP governor.

With all of these events fully documented on film, the initial response from the Mayor when Hogan reached out to her is rather staggering. She insisted that things were under control even as the city was going up in flames around her.

Hogan said that when he first called the mayor, she assured him that everything was under control. He recalled telling her that “it doesn’t look like everything’s under control. It looks like the city’s on fire.”

He said that the National Guard’s “overwhelming presence had a chilling effect on the rioters. They all went scurrying home and didn’t want to cause any more violence because we had an overwhelming display of force.”
Rawlings-Blake is on her way out, having chosen not to run for another term. In the interview, Hogan declared that her career is over, which sounds about right. But sadly, the price for her inaction and political calculations in a moment of crisis has already been paid and it’s the residents of the city’s poorest communities who picked up the tab.

I think her career as a pundit on ABC might be over, too.
