"Just because you're a journalist you are not exempted from assassination, if you're a son of a bitch."

Said Rodrigo Duterte, president-elect of the Philippines.
The Philippines is one of the most dangerous nations in the world for journalists, with 176 murdered since a chaotic and corruption-plagued democracy replaced the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos three decades ago....

"Most of those killed, to be frank, have done something. You won't be killed if you don't do anything wrong," said Duterte... "If you are an upright journalist, nothing will happen to you... The example here is Pala. I do not want to diminish his memory but he was a rotten son of a bitch. He deserved it."

Reminds me I saw Joe Conason on TV the other day.

Talk about Clinton fatigue. Where's that SOB been?

That's awesome! Can I use that line?

Reid J. Epstein would approve.

That brings to mind Megyn Kelley, the politically murderous beauty that controls Roger Ailes little game. She is still snarling for an hour every night about Trump refusing to be destroyed by her best work, and literally panting to see his demise.

@tim maguire,

"That's awesome! Can I use that line?"

Not advisable. I would suggest that you at least wait until the issues surrounding the copyright infringement suit filed by the Trump campaign are clarified.

If the yellow journalism by a specific reporter got your gorilla killed is it Ok then to kill a journalist? Or perhaps the reporters who killed millions by removing DDT from your arsenal is it Ok Then? Or killed 15,000 Pensioners in Paris for lack of access to cheap Chinese air conditioners during august because the Ozone Make Believe hole and DuPont profits because they convinced the UN that their new Freon was more important than their lives? There's a special place in He!! for both the folks that did this knowing the possible consequences and then did nothing about it. Not unusual, billions have been sacrificed on the altar of false science and the fame of their great men and women, to say nothing of all forms of socialism. Anything that denies free will to the masses and suppresses the first natural right of everyone, the right to vote with their pocket book, and use prices to signal what is truly important. You Idiots.

Duterte like Trump is a reaction, in this case to a very long standing public political style, and to long domination of the provinces by Manila. Duterte is the opposite.
For what its worth, I dont think he has actually killed any reporters.

Is anyone at long last going to look up and realize we are all staring into the abyss? Once the killing begins, when and where will it stop? It's like half are daring the other half.

Finally, at long last, another politician besides Hitler that the journalists can compare Trump to.

Strategypage had an article about him a few weeks ago.

Duarte is different, in more ways than one. ... Davao City was an economic mess and had one of the highest crime rates in the country. The local government was corrupt and Duarte said he would fix it. He did, but not by using methods anyone expected. His most alarming tactic was to approve the use of death squads to murder criminals caught in the act.

It's an article worth reading.

corruption-plagued democracy replaced the dictatorship

Iraq, after a trial for their dictator, and removal of an honest broker, could learn from the Philippines or vice-versa.

Libya, after sodomizing and aborting their dictator, and in the absence of an honest broker, can contribute to [class] diversity (e.g. racism, sexism) in Europe, America, etc.

"corruption-plagued democracy replaced the dictatorship"

And the dictatorship replaced a corruption-plagued democracy.

Actually its rather better these days, the current, outgoing Aquino administration has been squeaky clean by Philippine standards, and, frankly, by modern US standards. They were bending over backwards, at the highest levels anyway, to avoid the appearance of corruption. This led to a lot of complaints about long delays and just being unable to get on with it WRT public works, etc.

This last election has been in many ways quite remarkably clean, and remarkably democratic. Duterte owes much of his success to the very high voter participation rate enabled by the much more efficient election system and the public-private partnership with the Catholic election monitoring NGO, which is ironic considering Dutertes difficult relations with the church. I suspect he was surprised by his own success and is a bit at a loss.

To use figures on corruption (not entirely valid, but anyway)
As per Transparency International -
The Philippines went from the 130's in the decade of the 2000's - 134 in 2010, to 95 last year, which is quite a jump. I credit the outgoing government.
Its now in the same boat as Mexico, which may not be saying much.

Politicians who win in the Philippines do so by hiring the best bodyguards and the best journalists. The best bodyguards place a higher priority on protecting their candidates than on protecting the journalists who support their candidates. If journalists were paid better they could afford their own bodyguards.

The job of a journalist is to be an honest son of a bitch. I think nobody really minds when they do that, except those whose ox is the one gored by the reporting.

It is the "journalist" who chooses to tell a pre-chosen story, advance a biased or misleading narrative, or blatantly support one group over another who is a plain old son of a bitch. And I think those were the people referenced by the president elect.
