Obama speaks!

He's back, and talking to students at the University of Chicago. I haven't watched it yet, but here's the whole thing. I'll comment later if I can think of anything:

ADDED: Sorry, I cannot watch this. I'm just going to quote some things people were saying in the open thread a couple posts down. Chuck wrote:
Is anybody watching this Obama thing?... Words sort of fail me, in trying to describe what a feckless production disaster this is. It is as if Resident Director Barack Obama was meeting with all of the kids in his dorm hall. I think that they are passing the talking pillow, as they share their feelings.
And then:
I hope Althouse (Obama-voter Ann Althouse) does a post on that thing. It was hilariously bad. If she watches it, and blogs it, it will spare countless innocents from being bored into insensibility. If she does watch it, and doesn't turn it off after ten minutes...
Yeah, which is what I did.
... we will all owe her for blogging above and beyond the call of regular duties.

I read Obama's expression as, "OMG what am I doing here? Valerie is going to have hell to pay, for roping me into this..."

The disastrousness of this won't last. There is so much happening this week, and there was so little newsworthiness with Obama, that it won't even be news in a couple of hours. I'd understand, if she blew it off.
Thanks for your understanding.

I bet he said some totally boring and predictable bull. But the kids loved it. Obama is like Bill Clinton- it is hard to remember anything really smart they said or a great new idea they had.

I thank God I don't have to listen to this guy any more. If you want to, Althouse, you go right ahead.

I'll summarize it for you.

With book deals and speeches, Obama will likely make $30-40 Million this year alone.

This is, of course, more money than most schlubs would ever earn in 10 lifetimes.

What are the implications? He, his wife, his daughters will never worry about money or work. They could, literally, sit in a big ass house, watch a 96" tv screen and eat Bonbons for the rest of their lives.

Given this, what does he have to say that would resonate with us plebes?

If I was Obama, I'd be bragging. The oceans did not rise, and the planet must have healed, because it's still here!

It's nice of Obama to finally leave Richard Branson's glided yacht to tell the members of his cult what he thinks about this, that and the other.

It's also nice that I don't have to pay attention to anything he says because he's not in the WH anymore.

So as I mentioned in the earlier, talk-about-whatever-you-like post, this thing is remarkable, for how blandly terrible it is. I could watch about 5 or 10 minutes, and then had to turn it off. I came back, and watched a few more minutes, and again had to turn it off. I did it a third time, and again it was so awful; I honestly watched Obama's own demeanor, and I think he thought it was awful.

When C-SPAN does no more to produce an event than just setting up cameras and turning them on, those events come off more compelling than this drivel.

Watch at your own risk; but if you do, and if I missed one single interesting thing, please post and let me know.

"TRUMP: Number One, there’s great responsibility. When it came time to, as an example, send out the 59 missiles, the Tomahawks in Syria. I’m saying to myself, “You know, this is more than just like, 79 (sic) missiles. This is death that’s involved,” because people could have been killed..."

Althouse: "Oh, Jesus Christ. It's as though a child has become President. Or do all Presidents think such things, but only Trump lets the thoughts flow right through to the open air?"
--------------------
Althouse: "Pace is letting him get away with being scarily disordered. She's acting as though he's answering her questions. She's playing along. Break through all what?"
--------------------
Yep Trump's answers are "far superior".

I rather like John Henry's take on Trump's interview:

"President Trump has been a salesman all his life. You may or may not like what he is selling but he has been a master of it. He knows that the most important part of the sales process is knowing to ask for the order. Knowing how and when is important but the most important is asking.

We saw that in his campaigning style. He went out among the people and asked for the order (their vote) Loser-loser Hillary couln't be bothered. She could have had Wisconsin for the asking, probably. She didn't ask."

All Obama does is say a lot of flowery bullshit. But Dems like that.

On leadership, and what leaders say -

(Apocryphal I think, but used in Sergei Bondarchuks "Waterloo", and just what the old Hussar would have said, probably)

And Trump will dismantle Obama's legacy.

http://www.newyorker.com/humor/borowitz-report/obamas-barrage-of-complete-sentences-seen-as-brutal-attack-on-trump

"CHICAGO (The Borowitz Report)—In an appearance at the University of Chicago on Monday, former President Barack Obama unloaded a relentless barrage of complete sentences in what was widely seen as a brutal attack on his successor, Donald Trump.

Appearing at his first public event since leaving office, Obama fired off a punishing fusillade of grammatically correct sentences, the likes of which the American people have not heard from the White House since he departed.

“He totally restricted his speech to complete sentences,” Tracy Klugian, a student at the event, said. “It was the most vicious takedown of Trump I’d ever seen.”

“About five or six sentences in, I noticed that all of his sentences had both nouns and verbs in them,” Carol Foyler, another student, said. “I couldn’t believe he was going after Trump like that.”

Obama’s blistering deployment of complete sentences clearly got under the skin of their intended target, who, moments after the event, responded with an angry tweet: “Obama bad (or sick) guy. Failing. Sad!”"

Don't get mad, it's satire.

I find it interesting how little class the former D presidents exhibit. First it was the peanut farmer who couldn't shut his pious face. Then it was former Commander-in-Heat WJC, who not only could not leave the stage, he made millions off rich liberal schlubbs opening his orifice on various stages. And you just knew Obambi would re-surface, pining for adoration. Of course they all critique (or will), their successors.

It's classless, and right up Inga's alley.

I watched the beginning and had to stop. I'm no fan of Obama and I dislike his speaking style. This talk is the same: he talks about his time in chicago becoming a community organizer/agitator and to me it is just lies. He hesitates, he parses, he cogitates to come up with a halting answer. My experience is different. Most people when they talk about their lives know pretty well what they did and what they were thinking and the words come pretty easily.

eric said...

I want him to speak more and keep speaking.

There are a lot of 18-25 year olds who have no idea who this is. And they're going to vote in 2020. They need to hear this guy and say, "Who the hell elected him as President? What were they thinking?"

Because once you remove the music, the songs in his name, the columns from behind, the fawning news coverage, the women fainting at Rally's....

You're left with a scold. A bore. An empty suit.

But he, or his backers, have the money for..
music
songs in his name
columns from behind
fawning news coverage
and even fainting women. I wonder if they charge by the hour or by the faint.

“He totally restricted his speech to complete sentences

Two questions:

1) How many "ahs" and "uhms" did he use?

2) How many times did he use the word "I"?

3) Bonus question: Did he discuss corpsemen or the Austrian language?

Back when he was Senator Obama, my eldest daughter (then in high school) had him pegged: "He talks a lot, but he doesn't say anything."

He's definitely not as exciting to the ADHD crowd here as President Gameshow Host, who loves the poorly educated.

How predictable that you think people who take their futures more seriously than you do should be as thoughtless.

"You know what uranium is, right? This thing called nuclear weapons like lots of things are done with uranium including some bad things."

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

Most of the speaking was done by the students, if you'd bothered to watch. It was about getting youth engagement and identifying obstacles to that when it comes to involvement in politics. Pretty astounding that you short-term high-ons didn't seem to understand that. Obama can get people to listen to him because he listens to them, which is exactly what happened in the clip and exactly the opposite of what's been happening at these Republican town halls.

Obama fired off a punishing fusillade of grammatically correct sentence

Then he's improved? He's always had a first person pronoun problem. I don't mean the overuse of the subjective - he mistakenly uses the reflexive instead of the objective. It is a fairly common over-correction made by people who are trying to sound educated.

Roughcoat said...

His halting speech is an affect that recalls the "fashionable stutter" of English upper class men. The fashionable stutter isn't as common as it used to be but it hasn't disappeared entirely. Hugh Grant made his career with it. It's a form of humble-brag and it's bullshit.

cf said...

Roughcast, listen to @NPRnews if you can withstand the fumes, and you will hear a multiplicity of the fashionable stutter from all commentators and interviewers, especially when they want to signal friction or disagreement with the interviewee.

On Obama talking to chicago youth, is that right? : in 2009, I "hope"d our new President would address young men and say something like, "if you want a chance at growing up and dating either of my daughters, pull up your pants and make sure they are are nicely creased. Make the best of yourself."

I wish he still would help lead the young men that look up to him in such a way. alas, the brave president that might have been.

Plus, he's clean as a whistle! So he's got that going for him, which is nice.

Ha, ha, you don't even get the joke, Inga. Obama talks in fine, well-rounded periods, but he bollixed up the country and the world. Trump supporters know that Trump, well, maybe he don't talk so good, but he'll do what needs to be done.

The Obama presidency is getting smaller & smaller as time goes along. I can't think of a single thing, save campaigning, that he did well for America or the world.
