"The New York Times said on Monday that it was suspending Glenn Thrush, one of its most prominent reporters..."

"... after he was accused of inappropriate sexual behavior," the NYT reports.
The move came after the website Vox published a report containing allegations from four female journalists that Mr. Thrush, who was hired by The Times in January to cover the Trump administration, had acted inappropriately toward them. Mr. Thrush was a star reporter at Politico before joining The Times....

The women cited in the Vox article described Mr. Thrush’s behavior as including unwanted kissing and touching. Three of the women were not identified by name. The fourth, Laura McGann, wrote the article, which was presented in the first person.....
ADDED: Excerpt from the Vox piece (by Laura McGann):
I started to think maybe I shouldn’t be in journalism if I couldn’t hang in a tough newsroom. I found myself on edge, nervous and anxious all the time. I started to believe I had brought this all on myself.

In the course of reporting this story, I was told by a male reporter who’d worked at Politico at the time that my instinct was right. He said that the day after that night at the bar, Thrush told him about the incident, except with the roles reversed. I had come onto him, the reporter said Thrush told him, and he had gently shut it down....

The source said that Thrush frequently told versions of this story with different young women as the subject. He would talk up a night out drinking with a young attractive woman, usually a journalist. Then he’d claim that she came onto him. In his version of these stories, Thrush was the responsible grown-up who made sure nothing happened....

Actually, for quite a few men, the answer is yes.

For us men, the question isn't that there are such men. The question for us is why so many women give these men the time of day. Often, quite a bit more than the time of day, matter of fact.

It's good to remember in these situations that we're hearing about the moves that went bad, not the successful ones. These men behaved like this, well, because it worked often enough.

And what's really strange, is that the men that women seem to loath on sight, men who often are not thought of poorly by their fellow men, they're entirely innocent in these matters. The reason why? They're so loathed by women that they rarely get into close enough proximity to seriously misbehave.

Why do Lefty women believe the bogus 77 cents statistic? Because in the Obama White House it was perfectly true.

YoungHegelian said...

@tcrosse,

And if you asked most of these liberal guys getting taken out now by scandal "Do you like women?" Not, "like" in the sense of "do you like to fuck women?", or not "do you think that women should have equal societal rights?" kind of "like", but "do you like women as human beings?" I would bet that almost all of them would say "Yes, very much so". This genuine fondness for women no doubt formed a vital part of the reason that women were comfortable with them.

While I think that the next crew of men to replace these guys will no doubt be more circumspect in their dicking, they also may be men whose behavior was constrained by the fact that they never really had much truck with women anyhow.

glenn said...

So now we get to the question of Thrush’s reporting. If he lied about all his encounters with the young ladies it’s probable that his writing ...... mmmmm .... shades the truth from time to time. I sure hope the Times is checking this. Because I know somebody is.

These men are pigs, but just about every week there's a story about a female high school teacher who is caught screwing one of her male students, so it's not just men who can't control themselves. Why on earth a 30 year old woman is interested in a 16 year old boy instead of, you know, an actual man is beyond me. I don't understand that any more than I understand Louis CK's and Rose's and Weiner's urge to expose themselves.

The Godfather said...

"Is it that hard to not walk around trying to fuck everyone?"

In the '60's when I was in my late teens and early 20's I walked around WANTING to fuck (almost) every woman I met. But "trying" to do that would get you nowhere with most of them. First you had to take her out on what we called "dates", where you would buy her a meal and take her to a movie or a play or a concert or some other form of entertainment. You had to do this several times before making a serious move. And there was no guarantee that your move would be successful. Nowadays, I understand that the college kids (high school, too) do a thing called a "hook up", where they just pair off, get high, and wake up in bed the next morning not sure exactly what happened during the preceding 12 hours. It's a different world.

I'm not trying to excuse Glenn Thrust, I'm just trying to answer the question.

I tried to make this point yesterday and a couple of days ago. It really is about sexually immorality across the board.

About the female high school teachers specifically:

1) Many if not most of them are married, so it's not about access to sex.
2) Most of them are reasonably attractive, and would be able to easily pick someone up at a bar on Friday and Saturday nights.
3) Many of them are lesbian relationships.

The Conyers thing is especially interesting as it seems he used his staff to handle a lot of this, and used public funds as well.

The news was broken by Mike Cernovich, an "alt-right" figure, which is itself an interesting twist in independent reporting, as some of the figures involved or their agents trusted him with the affidavits.

bgates said...

Yeah, it's not just Bill Clinton and Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey and Glenn Thrush and Charlie Rose and Louis CK and Al Franken and James Toback and NPR's Michael Oreskes and MSNBC's Mark Halperin and Jeffrey Tambor and Ben Affleck and Vox Media's - this is the name I'm seeing - "Lockhart Steele" and John Conyers.

There are also allegations that Roy Moore may have assaulted a girl several years before the beginning of his 32 year marriage, and George HW Bush is said to rest his hand on the bottom of the woman next to him when his photo is taken while he's in his wheelchair.

buwaya said...

The dynamic is also that all this was there to be found by the MSM. Which was in a position to know, so close are their contacts with Congressional staff, etc.

Day after day it becomes clear just how corrupt the entire media industry is.

When you see those talking heads, consider what they know and arent telling you.

And just how corrupt your representatives are, because they all knew; and their staff, because THEY all knew. And the "permanent" government, because, of course, they know.

And what else they know, that you have not (yet) heard of.

This is the nature of the "swamp", revealed, so far, by some random samples over the territory. You are governed by utter scoundrels, without exception, because even the "clean" ones know.

You can't spit in Washington without hitting a scoundrel worth a scoop.

Its interesting to think where all this is coming from.

bgates said...

How easy it is to forget Bill O’ Reilly, Eric Bolling, Roger Ailes and Brett Ratner

First, if you're trying to even the right-left disparity by putting music video and (largely terrible) movie director Brett Ratner on the scale for the right, you're basically conceding the point that this is overwhelmingly a problem of the left.

Second, I didn't so much forget about Eric Bolling as I had never heard of Eric Bolling. But ok, he's recent and he's a bigger deal than James Toback.

Third, I see your Roger Ailes and raise you an Anthony Weiner, if you want to go back to last year's headlines.

Bill O'Reilly, that's six months ago - and he says he didn't do anything wrong.

Ah, let's not be naive about men. Creepers exist on all aspects of the political spectrum.

In any case, I've got generational thoughts. The under-Boomer left is good with throwing the Clintons & Kennedys under the bus. They are happy to clean house on the Hill. The right isn't the only political party in a Burn-It-All-Down sort of mood.

wwww said...

Another generational thought. Many of these creepers are Boomers. Are younger generations less likely to creep, or were they just too young & less likely to be in power?

buwaya said...

These are systems, not generations.

And what you all dont know about money-scandals is, well, on the scale of the US economy. Sex scandals are sexy, but money actually matters.

The scale of your problem is such that its quite as hard to grasp as the milky way galaxy. And the only way you are going to fix it is to eliminate the bulk of your public institutions, and then reconstruct them.

Yancey Ward said...

Progressives may want to think this will be balanced out, but I doubt it will- the left and right aren't really the same in this one important regard- it is harder to be a conservative and get away this behavior if you have a high political profile. If the gates are really opening up on the public revelations such behavior, it is extremely likely Democrats and liberals will be the vast majority of revealed perpetrators, in entertainment and media (for demographic reasons, too), but also in politics.

The Vault Dweller said...

I'm starting to think women need to tough it up. It is one of two things, if women are so fragile that they need the state or society to weigh in, in all these matters then they need to get tougher. The other way is that men and women are inherently incompatible in the workplace because men will always take advantage of women, if that is the case, the utilitarian morality applies and I want a workplace that has men rather than women, since men will accomplish more than women.

bgates said...

Ah, let's not be naive about men.

Ah, let's be able to count.

Its interesting to think where all this is coming from.

Yes it is. I'm not nearly enough of a Kremlinologist to identify a faction that's being weakened here - it's not all Clinton people or Obama people or Bernie people. On the other hand, our resident progs are very clear that this is a Man Problem. A year and a half ago, the clear beneficiary of a Man Problem would have been Hillary. (I wonder, had she realized what kind of trouble she was in, if she would have had the imagination to make this happen last summer.) Today? Who would want to defenestrate all of these Party loyalists for Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris?

Michael K said...

No, I think this is battle space prep to go after Trump next year. We already see some of it.

"We got rid of Clinton so you must get rid of Trump."

The difference is that there are no examples of proven allegations about Trump.

There are allegations without any evidence, just like in the Moore case but Trump, who does say outrageous things, has no history of behavior like these other (mostly Democrats and leftists) men. The next thing that might come out would be allegations against powerful bisexual women.

The political left is always excited to find a Republican miscreant but they have been protecting the bad guys on their own side for so long that the flood will not stop just yet.

The misbehavior on the left goes back beyond even John Kennedy. Roosevelt died in the arms of his mistress.

Ted Kennedy is probably the most outrageous example with a death to his discredit, but Dodd and Frank and a whole litany of Democrats exist, mostly as a result of abortion politics and gay rights, which have both been staples of leftist politics for decades.

The destruction of the culture, mostly by Democrats , is also a factor.

So, all we have to do to destroy the lives of every single NYT writer is "accuse" them of a sexual crime? And since they could have a secret gay life, even men can do the accusing?

Wow, this is going to be fun!

No, they didn't. They fought and died on that hill.

You want to "get rid of Clinton", now? Then you need to burn down every single one of his former defenders who isn't willing to say "The Republicans, and Ken Starr were right, and I was wrong."

No ifs, ands, or buts about it. No "but the Republicans ...." It was wrong. it was indefensible, and you're not going to defend it at all.

Until the Left is willing to do that, they still own Clinton.

And Kennedy. and biden. And Franken. And Gerry Studds. And Barney Franks.

Until then, it's not principle, it's just political expediency. And we owe nothing to people who are merely operating on political expediency.

The point is that most of the support for the Left comes from the desire to receive an otherwise unearned stamp of moral and intellectual superiority by parroting its BS (AKA "Virtue Signaling").

If they want to remove the stain of Clinton, they're going to have to sacrifice that unearned sense of moral superiority. Which, frankly, i don't believe they'll be willing to do, because that would require them to engage in actual thought, and display actual judgment.

It struck me today (d'oh) that what Trump said in the Access Hollywood tape was exactly, 100% correct--rich, famous men do get to take liberties with women who "let them." And what we have been seeing the last 2 months proves it.

This is aside from whatever Trump, himself, may or may not have ever done. But just taking his words at face value, he was telling the truth about a large class of people--rich powerful men and many of the women who are around them (for one reason or another).

It is actually getting to be a rather old story--Trump tells the truth and people get the vapors as if he is somehow responsible for the state of the world.
