Snoop Dogg is now Snoop Lion... and he's the reincarnation of Bob Marley.

The new music will be reggae, not rap. He's 40 years old now and he's "got to give something" that the children can listen to, because "That's what you do when you're wise."

He says he's "born again" — born again as a Rastafarian.
Snoop didn't explain why he was switching from "Dogg" to "Lion," but it's likely a reference to the Lion of Judah, a religious symbol popular in Rastafarian and Ethiopian culture....

He said that in Jamaica, where he stayed for 35 days, he grew closer to his wife....
PR/religion? Who knows? But the sense of growing older and needing to provide for the next generation.... And since Bob Marley's son Rohan is happy with all this leveraging on Bob Marley, sure, go ahead. It's for the children.

Via Throwing Things.

Oh, but Rohan is not Bob Marley's only child.
Bob Marley had a number of children: three with his wife Rita, two adopted from Rita's previous relationships, and several others with different women. The Bob Marley official website acknowledges eleven children.

Those listed on the official site are:

Sharon, born 23 November 1964, to Rita in previous relationship
Cedella born 23 August 1967, to Rita
David "Ziggy", born 17 October 1968, to Rita
Stephen, born 20 April 1972, to Rita
Robert "Robbie", born 16 May 1972, to Pat Williams
Rohan, born 19 May 1972, to Janet Hunt
Karen, born 1973 to Janet Bowen
Stephanie, born 17 August 1974; according to Cedella Booker she was the daughter of Rita and a man called Ital with whom Rita had an affair; nonetheless she was acknowledged as Bob's daughter
Julian, born 4 June 1975, to Lucy Pounder
Ky-Mani, born 26 February 1976, to Anita Belnavis
Damian, born 21 July 1978, to Cindy Breakspeare

Would it be too much to just go by his given name, Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr.?

Snoop has found a purpose. I wish him well.

He's lucky he's his own incarnation.

He's only 40?

Good grief does he party too much. I thought he was in his 50's...

Born again? Please. He's rebranding. Needs a religion in order to seem more grown up. Islam didn't work out for him. They probably objected to his pot. Hell, Norway objected to his pot. Bob Marley was a (very) human being. Snoop's a product.

Ziggy's the only child I'd heard of but that's because he is also a musician and sounds a lot like his father.

As for Snoop Lion, I don't care why he's changing but going from hip hop to reggae is a good move in my opinion.

Holy cow, Bob was certainly busy in the fall of 1971, impregnating 3 women within a month.

Didn't they have condoms back then?

Ah yes, the followers of the God Emperor Haile Selassie I, right? I have nothing against Rastafarianism, I suppose, but it does strike me as one of the more peculiar religions of the modern period. The Emperor was a devout Ethiopian Orthodox Christian, after all.

He was born nine years before Marley died. That's a pretty strange form of reincarnation.

Snoop was down here about 3 months ago with Wiz Kalifa. I think both those guys have the requisite ganja consumption to follow in the shoes of Marley. Perhaps even including the brain cancer.

I eagerly await Snoop Lion's entry into the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church.

Snoop is smoking too much ganja, man.
I do love how he found the religion directly tied into his love of weed.

How convenient. He converts to a religion that allows him to keep smoking weed. In fact, it's kind of a sacrament. Plus, he still has an absurd name.

At least he found a religion where he doesn't have to switch sacrament.

Fun fact, Anna Wintour and Bob Marley had a weeklong affair in the 70s.

"In 'Front Row: The Cool Life and Hot Times of Vogue's Editor in Chief,' Jerry Oppenheimer recounts how in the late '70s, Wintour's pal, Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, introduced the fashionista to Marley and got her a backstage pass to one of Marley's shows in New York. She immediately 'fell for' the pot-smoking musician.

"She was 'riveted' and acted as if she'd 'met God,' one friend tells Oppenheimer, who reports she 'virtually disappeared for a week' while notorious womanizer Marley was in town, spending all her time backstage.

"When Wintour finally resurfaced, she looked utterly worn out from her exertions with the rasta legend, but denied to friends she'd spent the week in Marley's bed. Pals didn't buy it and assumed she merely wanted to keep him to herself."

So Wintour seems to have a weakness for godlike Choomers.

I've been expecting this one for a *long* time. He's late I never expected him to reach 40 before having this conversion.

Look, IMO Snoop had a real, real talent and cadence that other rappers just did not have - and he just blew the opportunity on living an adolescent lifestyle into early middle age.

I hope it takes, and he can make up for lost time, but I don't know. Might be too late and be just gimmicky now.

So is Snoop now Lion, like Iron, in Zion?

I wouldn't be surprised if someday he's running like a fugitive

"Snoop Dogg is now Snoop Lion"

So in the next version, he'll be 'Snoop Mountain Lion'?

Well, I have to agree with Snoop Lionny Lion, rap and hip hop are tiresome. He helped make them so, actually. Early rap was some good stuff, before it was turned into a formula and guys like Snoop came along. But really, 30 years is WAY too long for any genre to try to pass itself off as "edgy".

All of that said, the one thing that's probably more tiresome and generic than hip hop in 2012, is reggae.

There are a lot of great derivative styles that have come from Ska, Reggae, and similar genres. Jamaican music continues to give birth to some great stuff, in Jamaica, the US, and elsewhere. But Reggae, per se is just a formula, too, at this point. It's almost like he announced that he'd be starting a Beatles cover band.
