Mystery photo of the day.

scrapbook 2_0007

IN THE COMMENTS: David looks ahead to the next photo in the series.

scrapbook 2_0006 - Version 2

ADDED: The top picture is November 1951, my parents' failed attempt to make a photograph that could be used in a Christmas card. (I've tweaked the very dark original to make the image reasonably visible.) The second picture is September 1951, at Niagara Falls. For reference: I was born in January 1951. The other child is my older sister.

That can only be a baby Althouse and her big sister.

Saddle shoes on the blond in the previous photo on Flicker.

Looks like an old pic.

Saddle shoes were big in the 1930's but survived to the 50's.

I say it's your mom, Professor.

And someone.

Saddle shoes on gradeschoolers lasted into the 60s, David

Trust me on this.

When I was a child circa 1955, I was under the impression that saddle shoes were the latest thing. But then I assumed all good things like Twinkies, Dr. Pepper and ice cream sandwiches were invented just for us.

Niagara Falls! That's a daring perch on which to place a baby.

Kids on a barrier beam overlooking the falls at Niagra. Shades of Michael Jackson! Akin to letting kids crawl around the car while driving. Or no helmets while bike riding. How did the Althouse kids ever survive the 50's? And neither of you look to happy...

The beginning of my aversion to travel!

It's funny, I didn't realize I'd been taken to Niagara Falls, even though I'd paged through the album with that picture many times.

The photos are tiny and mostly badly lit, so in scanning them today, I'm seeing things I never noticed.

People in the 1950s didn't worry much about kids getting hurt!

Actually if you look at the photo, someone is holding Althouse's arm, her sister is also holding her, the beam is big enough for her to completely sit on, and its only a 3 foot drop to the wood plank deck below.

Not much of a safety issue.

Well, you look like your mother.

@rcocean - was being facetious and flip to extend the conversation. Of course the Althouse girls weren't in any real danger. Until they got back in their parent's automobile. Query: Were the girls exposed to second hand cigarette smoke while riding in a car with no seatbelts and clambering around?

"Well, you look like your mother."

What picture of my mother have you seen?!

Niagara Falls!

Slowly I turned... Step by step...

BTW, you can tell that photo was from the 50s because your parents blissfully perched their children on the railing at the top of the falls for a picture.

Just making excuses for my bad guess. Most beautiful women resemble their mothers though.

Hows that for butterup?

Pics of Althouse's mom. Is your memory going along with your sense of smell?
