"I think the past is going to make a great comeback."

Things heard at Meadhouse.

Meade said it, in the midst of a conversational context which I will provide later. For now, over to you.

I recently saw an article about why you should ditch your current smartphone for a dumb ole flip phone. I guess I am on the cutting edge....for once.

Shit goes in cycles? At my age I've already seen a couple. At your age, it must be like a life spent in a washing machine.

Yep, things go in cycles--big cycles and little cycles. For instance, civilizational collapse, the Dark Ages, happened more than once and it will happen again. Sooner or later. Democracy thrived and crumbled and it will again. The Ice Age happened more than once and it will happen again. Sooner or later.

And so on.

The adultery past required outside pay phones.

back in the 1970s thru 1990s The prettiest young ladies with perfect hair and seductive make up could be seen at dusk every evening having long talks on pay phones outside in the parking lot of the local 7/11s.

The Ebola scare will die down and ISIS will not succeed in taking Baghdad.

Obama will resume golfing and meeting with billionaires at $32,000-per-plate fundraisers to defend the middle class.

Good Ol’ Days
Buzz King

Did you mean when you were high on inhalents?
Or did you mean when you were into Guns ‘n Roses?
Did you mean when you were broke and useless?
What did you mean when you said you missed the good ol’ days
And the way things used to be?

Did you mean when you were always wasted?
Or did you mean when you were selling your blood?
Did you mean when you were sleeping with a psycho?
What did you mean when you said you missed the good ol’ days
And the way things used to be?

Did you mean when you were into John Travolta?
Did you mean when you were waking up in vomit?
Did you mean when you were caking on the make-up?
What did you mean when you said you missed the good ol’ days
And the way things used to be?

The past is never dead. It's not even past.

Don't call it a comeback. It's been here for years.

I agree, if by past he is talking about the Black Death and Dark Ages.......

Change for the sake of change isn't all its cracked up to be. Making things worse still constitutes "change" Shit, it wasn't called "Hope and Improvement." It's time to get back to those tried and true ideas that certain folks wish to discard just because they didn't think of it first.

I immediately thought of the past my dad used to describe: closures of beaches because of polio, and common death from staph infections.

I think the millenials are going to learn the hard way why all that "morality crap" was important to begin with.

The correct response is:

"Why don't you go away and come back ten years ago."

If the reference is to the plucky Royals, they will be swept out of the series by the Cardinals.

Maybe the reference is to a gauzy, romanticized past in general. According to the socialist progressives, the moral arc of the universe bends toward justice. Therefore, we are descendants of injustice.

What's past is the only thing that can make a comeback.

The past is always coming back.

Well, except for brass bathroom fixtures. Those still aren't in style again, and never will be.

Whatever the context, that's a great line.

Maybe Victorian prude is making a (sad) comeback, e.g. school sex codes.

"All this has happened before. And will happen again. And again. And again. And again..."

Fen said...

Gee, if only there was a political philosophy that conserved these "lessons learned" so we didn't have to keep repeating the same mistakes generation after generation...

RecChief said...

um - an adversarial press for the Senate after November? A Clinton White House? just making some guesses on the context.

mccullough said...

Royals swept by the Cardinals? Which of these teams is not in the World Series. The Cardinals have a great organization. The Giants have an even better one.

Just so long as it's not polyester.

Next year will mark the 30th anniversary of Back to the Future. Cafe 80's, anyone?

wildswan said...

Fearful communicable diseases of all kinds and rigid sex codes are related phenomena of the past. Beheading - a thing of the past. Unending high unemployment after a crash - happened in the past. Incompetent president as talk of civil war begins - read up on James Buchanan - the president just before Lincoln.

Lindsay Ellis mentions something called the "40 year rule" in a video I linked here. Each generation becomes obsessed with a prior era: 40 years is just long enough ago to be remembered, but long enough to be romanticized. "Mad Men" became a hit for this reason.

I expect more 60's nostalgia in the future.

chickelit said...

And then eventually, nostalgia the 1970's. We're already seeing it in the behavior of the occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

Could not agree more, mccullough, though, as a Dodgers fan, it pains me deeply. Profoundly.
