"It may sound strange that so harmless a liquid as water may require to be guarded against, but it is even so."

"Drenching the stomach with it just before, or during a hearty meal, plays the mischief with the digestions, and in most cases with the personal comfort. And yet it is a common practice.... The drink we recommend, and not too much of that, is water only. By a proper choice of food, much thirst may always be avoided.... As to the appetite for ice-water, for instance, in the hot weather, it is an artificial one; simple cool water, and not too cool, is much more wholesome."

Advice on what to drink, from the newly discovered writings of Walt Whitman, "Manly Health and Training, With Off-Hand Hints Toward Their Conditions."

He is way off-base on this.
It's obvious that the healthiest drink of all is beer.
It used to be the breakfast drink of choice, before tea or coffee, and with a bit if social media backing, it can be so again!
Who is with me?

Walt Whitman. Kind of the Scott Adams of his day.

Wow. Stupid.

Yet he thought to broadcast his stupidity. That's another thing to consider.

They didn't have Strunk and White back then to teach them the proper use of the semicolon and the appositive. Terrible writing. I wonder whether Mark Twain was the changer of all that.

Granted, beer for breakfast may not be ideal for campaigning politicians.
It is probably good for the morale and productivity of the rest of us drudges though.

Way off base. The only drink suitable for a man is bourbon. On the rocks of course.

A liquid may require to be guarded against. What other important needs might the liquid have? What is the threat or danger to the water? Is it a danger to itself?

Whitman might have been paid by the word for writing. Nobody pays Hammond by the word for reading

Water intoxication, also known as water poisoning, is a potentially fatal disturbance in brain functions that results when the normal balance of electrolytes in the body is pushed outside safe limits by overhydration.

Actually, when I drink water it seems to exacerbate any indigestion or heartburn I might have.

I have to drink it separately from food.
